When you are a 1-7 (age) you don't really have any special assignments. Except you get to have special clothing that resembles what number you are. When you are an 8 you get to start your dedication hours, which is where you get to go to whatever job you want and help. When you are a 9 you receive a bike and that is pretty much it until you become a 12. When you become a 12, it is the most important year of your childhood. This is the year where you receive your assignment (job). Something very interesting happens at this part and really makes you want to keep reading.
The Giver starts off telling you about the utopia society (perfect world) that these people live in. The main character, Jonas, and his family and friends have no idea what a normal world would be like. They have to wake up in the morning and talk about their feelings, have to go to school and learn big study's, and have to do special jobs after school depending on what number you are.
Jonas receives his assignment very scared. He gets the most important assignment of all. His assignment causes him to know things he should not know and to see and hear things he should not know. This makes Jonas very upset and makes him take someone and do something that changes everything.
