RECOGNITION

Erasmus Mundus in the Southern Mediterranean

European Commission, June 2013

Middle East and North Africa

Erasmus Mundus Action 1 and 2

All partners have made clear efforts to go beyond the minimum requirements of supplying students with a set of documents aiming at the recognition of the studies abroad (learning agreement, diploma supplement and transcript of records), and to aim at full recognition of either credits or diploma.

almost 4000 students (EMA2) selected during 2010-2012

around 600 students selected for EM Master Courses (EMA1) 2004-2013

Commitments made by the partnerships have not always been easy to achieve, but these possibilities offered by the programmes have raised awareness of the respective Ministry of HE about the issue of recognition of qualifications and credits transfer and of the need to facilitate the recognition process.

15 students selected for EM Joint Doctorates (EMA1) 2010-2013

Knowledge of recognition procedures in

South-Mediterranean

recognition of degrees and credits earned abroad is important to encourage mobility of students, graduates, researchers and academics at regional and international level

Improved tools to support recognition of credit mobility periods

Guidelines on recognition of transnational education qualifications

one of the main components of internationalisation is MOBILITY of students and staff

it contributes to getting higher positions in rankings

increased knowledge of higher education systems

it helps increase the quality of higher education

official and complete information on study cycles, HEIs and certificates

...but, yet some obstacles hinder effective and quality mobility

the experience and knowledge acquired at HEIs in foreign countries might not be recognised at HEIs of origin, nor it might be integrated in the students and staff's careers

improved credential evaluation procedures

which benefits both the institution as a whole and the individuals

recognition processes of degrees and credits earned abroad are still too bureaucratic and difficult

entrepreneurial capacity

revised certificates and standardised mobility documents, more easily readable and transparent, providing all elements needed by foreign credential evaluators

interculturtal skills

In the face of such obstacles and risks, students and staff might decide not to make learning and teaching experiences abroad, in order not to "loose time" by making experiences abroad which could not be counted in their official academic career

acquisition of new competences

exposure to new approaches to teaching, learning and research

I studied one year abroad, I took several courses and succesfully passed many exams, but the very good records that I obtained could not be transferred into my career at my home university.

why studying 1 term abroad if the exams I pass there will not be recognised by my university of origin?

it provides

visibility and prestige

to the institution

involvement in transnational networks

Hi mum and dad! I won a scholarship to study abroad, but my qualifications are not considered enough to have access to next level at that university. How come? at home it would be indeed! You'll have to pay the tuition fees to let me continue studying at my usual university
