Punic Wars - World History 1

The Punic Wars

Rome and Carthage were competing

for the same trading routes

1st Punic War

264 - 241 BCE

Rome developed the first Navy for this war

Rome defeats Carthage and gains control over Sicily and Sardinia

2nd Punic War

218 - 202 BCE

Carthage wants revenge from the 1st war

Hannibal - General for Carthage creates army and leads attack

Hannibal rides elephants

Hannibal wins almost all battles, but doesn't conquer the city of Rome

Finally they return home to fight the invasion of the Romans

The Romans win this battle

Carthage must give up all territories except those in Northern Africa

Rome attacks Carthage and completely destroys it

Legend says the Romans poured salt on the ground of Carthage so nothing would ever grow there again

After the Punic Wars

For the next 100 years Rome dominates the Mediterranean and spreads the Roman culture

If Carthage would have won, their culture would've spread

Finally, Rome's trade routes and territories expand due to their victories over Carthage
