Not much is known about Gabriel until the 1990s when she was chosen by her community and the People of the Longhouse to be their spokesperson during the “Oka” Crisis. The “Oka” Crisis was a land dispute which began on July 11th, 1990 and ended September 26th, 1990. It was between the town of Oka, Quebec, Canada and the Mohawk people. Oka wanted to expand a golf course and suburban development onto the land that was originally used the Kanehsatake. This land included a burial ground for their ancestors with standing tombstones and a large forest with pine trees. The Mohawk people had filed a land claim 1986 but they were denied. The Kanehsatake asked Ellen Gabriel to be their spokesperson and chief negotiator for the Oka Crisis and she accepted. At the age of 31, she had a big job because the mayor of the Oka, Jean Ouellette was very persistent about the go-head of bulldozing down of the pine forest. In the end, after many blockades,
Ellen Gabriel was born in Kanehsatà:ke, Katsi’tsakwas and grew up in the 1960s. She is known for being the spokesperson for this community during the 1990 “Oka” Crisis. She is a Human Rights Activist and an artist.
