Our brief was to take three pictures linked around the theme of light. The first thing we did was take into account different types of light and categorised them into two groups artificial and natural. We thought about how these items are also placed in these categories, so we wanted something artificial and something natural that were linked. Our next idea came from the stimulus of a news article we’d been informed about and after looking up the issue we decided to use it. The article was about how bottled water has been linked to causing cancer because of the plastic they're made from. We then decided to juxtapose this bottled water with natural water, this also worked well with light because of the way water refracts with light.
This is my photo which I took in an attempt to show the idea of mixing a natural substance with artificial light, the opposite of Rianna's photograph which was portraying the idea of natural light and manufactured bottle of water. The theme of our groups idea was to explore the divide and differences between artificial light and natural light. The idea behind my photograph was to mix the artificial light with a natural substance (water). I attempted to pour the water so that it would treakle down forming a puddle being luminated by the artificial light projected by old lamp found in the drama studio, which was where my photograph was situated. I believe that my final image was well done, however it required minor modification such as cropping the photo, lowering the contrast and the brightness.
A few problems which occured was that the setting in which my photo was obtainned wasn't as dark as I had hoped, however it was the darkest room available so I had to make do with what was on offer. I resolved this using photoshop by lowering the brightness and the contrast.
Also a problem which occured was that in the final shot, in the right side of the shot, the curtain which moved allowed a little bit of light in which didn't ruin it but it would have been prefferable to erase it from the final image, which was done in photoshop by cropping the image.
Another issue i was confronted with was attempting to aim the treakling water to the left side of my shot, I tried to do this so that it would show that I acknowledged the rule of thirds and used it to make my photograph more professional and interesting. However I found no sufficient way which could assist me in doing so, because I had cropped the photo it also made it more central. Therefore i just tried to provide this effect to the best of my ability in order to target our audience in the desired manor.
A reason as to why I like this image is the idea and story behind it and how it links to both Rianna and Sam's images. I like the idea of mixing two differences in an attempt to show divide.
A reason as to why i dislike this image is that the image on its own doesn't provide much of a story or explanation with depth. Another reason why I dislike this photo is the positioning of the water, I believe the photo would have looked more interesting if the water was more left as apposed to being central.
This was my picture, my job was to show the divide between natural
and artificial objects and where we believe most people would place
them visually in their mind, for example we believe most people
would say that the manufactured bottle should be in a dark factory
getting made, whereas natural water should be in a river or waterfall.
In terms of content i wanted this picture to have the two natural and artifical objects, both with the lighting mentioned previously and a divide, to show they were different. I decided this could be done with the use of a door frame, the shadow on one side of the door could represent the sort of dark connotations of artificial and the natural light on the other could juxtapose this. The form of my picture was planned to a level picture with as much space on either side of the door to show that artificial and natural both have their place this would be a bias however because of the fact your eye is drawn to the lighter section, I believe this is okay however because you Rianna’s picture shows artificial in a different light. When taking the picture I came across some problems, one was the awkward angle I had to take the picture at, because of the door frame I could get behind the camera to see what was in shot. To make sure I got a few good shots I did the picture a few times. However this did maybe lead to the biggest problem in my picture, which was the fact that Stephen was in the background of the picture. I’ve now learnt to check the background. Another problem was that in the original picture I didn’t think the contrast was what I wanted it, i solved this by going on to Photoshop and changing the contrast and brightness. I don’t think my idea changed at all in the production stage. I think the idea of having the exhibition on Prezi was good idea, because it can be easily accessed and it gives the images a different feel and interpretation to make young people interested in the pictures, I would have however also liked printed images because computer screens can seem very flat.
My photograph was of a plastic manufactured bottle with natural water inside it. The overall theme of our photos were natural vs. supernatural so in my background we had natural lighting for my artificial object. When doing pre-production i really liked the contrast of two different things being compared and creating a sense of divide. I feel the final image was well done with a few minor problems throughout the production. One of my major issues was having the natural light at the right angle and brightness. To overcome this problem i got right down onto the floor to make the bottle seem more superior and I used what else I had to my best ability. I decided not to edit my photo as i wanted the naturalistic side of it to come through and to stay as natural as possible.
When actually taking the photo i got on the floor to give the bottle hight but also so the light was at the right angle as best as possible. I took the picture so that the bottle hit the rule of thirds and to make it look more interesting.I had to take quite a few photo's to get the effect I wanted but sometimes that needs to happen to be able to target our audience in the right way.
The reason I like this photo is because the hedge creates two distinctive lines across the image that draws your eye into the image. There are a few dislikes towards this photo as it can be seen as quite boring or commercial, i however dont think that there is much i could have done to change this as this was the aim for the photo. One other reason I dislike this photo is because not enough light is drawn into the bottle so it doesn’t look as interesting as it could have done with the light bouncing off the object.
