Psychographics

Demographics

If our film got too violent, for example, and had to be rated as an 18, this would limit our audience too much.

For example, the reason why the audience of Saw would like our film is because both are very gory and involve torture contraptions which are used to make the villain even scarier to the audience.

Although our product could appeal to all psychographics, as the horror genre appeals to a variety of people, our film would mostly attract explorers.

This is again to do with the main characters. However, not just for age, but for interests as well, because the audience would be able to relate themselves to the film more if they are similar to those of the characters.

One example of this is the fact that the girls in the film start out at a party. If the audience also does this, it increases the normality of the characters situation and becomes more scary to them.

As well as being able to take basic information from our audience research, the questionnaire also meant we knew in which professions our audience was in and what their hobbies and interests were as well...

Our questionnaire showed that people with a range of occupations would watch our film, but mainly students. Therefore I would say the the demographic of our film would be from E, all the way to B.

This is because our film aims mainly at a specific gender, rather than profession.

Also, the main reason why our product appeals mainly to student is because they are around the age of the main characters of film.

According to BBFC regulations, our film would be classified as a 15.

To be classified as an 18, a film would include:

  • very strong violence
  • frequent strong language

and/or very strong language

  • strong portrayals of sexual activity
  • scenes of sexual violence
  • strong horror
  • strong blood and gore
  • real sex (in some circumstances)
  • discriminatory language and behavior

The reason our film does not fit into an 18 rating is because, there are only brief mentions of strong language, it doesn't dwell on sex and there is no discriminative language or behavior throughout.

Films classed as a 15 include:

  • strong violence
  • frequent strong language
  • portrayals of sexual activity
  • strong verbal references to sex
  • sexual nudity
  • brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence
  • discriminatory language or behavior
  • drug taking

Out of these, our film would include a lot of strong violence, some strong language and there is suggestions of sex and alcohol in the opening party scene.

Basic Information

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our audience would have to be fans of films in the horror genre and enjoy being scared.

They would probably be people who enjoyed other similar horror films to ours, such as:

  • Insidious
  • Nightmare on Elm Street
  • Saw
  • Scream

This is because it is what is classed as normal in society and so this is who we both based and aimed our film on, as it meant our product was more likely to be relatable for the audience.

Age: 15-30 (this goes for the audience of most horror films).

Gender: Mainly female, due to the 3 main female characters.

Class: Working - Middle Class

Education: Comprehensive Schools

Skin Colour: n/a

Race: n/a

Pre-Production Research

This is not attainable, as we were more specific about the age, gender and place in society of our audience, rather than skin colour or race, in order to not limit who our film would appeal to too much.

Before we began producing our film, we had to do audience research in order to ensure there were people out there who would spend time and money on our product.

Therefore, we published an audience questionnaire to social networking website, Facebook.

The feedback we received from our questionnaire gave us an insight into the lives and interests of the public and how we could adapt our film to both, increase and please an audience of our product.
