Pilgrimage: A journey of great moral or religious significance, typically to a shrine or other location

important to an individuals religion.

Martyr: someone who suffers persecution and death for refusing to back down from his/her beliefs.

Direct Characterization: presents direct statements about a character.

  • example: Chaucer's statement that the Knight "followed chivalry, / Truth, honor..."

Indirect Characterization: uses actions, thoughts, and dialouge to reveal the character's personality.

  • example: By saying "he was not gaily dressed, " Chaucer suggests that the Knight is not vain and perhaps takes the pilgrimage seriously enough to rush to join it straight from battle.

Social Commentary: writing that offers insight

into society, its values and its customs.

Exemplum: a story that teaches a lesson

through using an example.

Characteristics of the Exemplum:

  • Characters, events, and things that happen in 3's.
  • A test of the character's moral fiber, leading to their destiny.
  • A mysterious guide who helps point the way.
  • A just ending that rewards good and punishes evil.
