Terra Cotta

Terra Cotta Army:

  • Sculptures resembling the armies of Qin Shi Huang(1st emperor of China)
  • Sculputres date back to 3rd century BC
  • Tallest sculptures= the army generals
  • The higher the rank of a person the taller the sculputure was built
  • Terra Cotta of warriors, chariots, and horses
  • Also found in the pits (that were not a part of the army) were officials, acrobats, strongmen, and musicians

Terra Cotta Pit No.1

  • discovered by local villagers in March 1974 who were drilling for wells on a piece of land.
  • They found pieces of terracotta warriors and many bronze weapons.
  • rectangular pit
  • measuring 252 yards long, 68 yards wide and 16 feet deep
  • Over 6,000 Terra Cotta warriors and horses

They are posed looking ready for war.

  • "L" shaped
  • Covers an area of 7,176 square yards
  • 136 yds. long x 107 yds. wide and 16 feet deep
  • over 80 war chariots, about 1,300 terra cotta warriors and horses, and thousands of bronze weapons
  • area of 622 square yards
  • 19.2 yards long , 23.4 yards wide and 15.7 feet deep.
  • it is the command center or headquarters for all the groups in the other two pits
  • 68 terracotta warriors, four horses and one chariot
  • do not have heads--it is believed that robbers broke in and vandelized them

Terra Cotta: a form of funerary art buried

and whose purpose was to protect people in the afterlife.
