The Roman had slaves.

Many of them became free as they got older and their owners didn't want to take care of them anymore.

The nannies were freed as the childeren got older

They could also buy their freedom.

School

  • Some rich boys went to school.
  • Most girls didn't go to school.
  • Some kids were home schooled.
  • If they were home schooled, they were taught by their parents, teachers, or slaves.

o Naming a Roman baby

  • More important than the day of birth
  • Tiny metal trinkets are strung around the baby’s neck
  • Also given an elaborate locket of gold(rich), or leather(poor).It contained charms to ward off evil. Boys can remove it only after he becomes a Roman citizen. Girls can only remove it on her wedding day.

o Marriage

  • Monogamous
  • Minimal ages were 12(girls) and 14(males)
  • Augustus gave money to people that got married or gave birth, since there were so little.

o Death

  • Afterlife, no generally accepted view on it, though
  • Souls go to underworld unless denied by the gods
  • If denied, the souls will wander in limbo for eternity
  • The bodies were usualy creamated

  • Their democracy would be the basis for most modern democracies
