Most verbs are ACTION verbs.
They show the noun or pronoun DOING something.
The bus STOPPED at the corner.
She WAVED from the window.
The mayor SPOKE to the crowd.
Stolid people HURRIED up the street.
Some verbs are LINKING verbs.
They show the subject IS something.
In math we say 2+2=4.
Both sides of the equation are equal.
In English we say "John is a sailor."
Both sides of the sentence are equal.
John = sailor
A linking verb is like an equals sign.
The old tree IS leaning.
Hal WAS a baker.
Nigel LOOKED friendly.
Jane SMELLED like apples.
