Line: a mark with length and direction; can be implied by edges of shapes and forms
Value: Light and Darkness of a colour
Form is a three dimensional object that has volume. An Artist can shade with their pencil to give a 2D drawing the illusion of 3D form.
Colour comes from light - if it weren’t for light, we would have no colour. Shining a light into a prism will create a rainbow of colours because it separates the colour of the spectrum. When the light rays hit an object, our eyes respond to the rays that are reflected back and we see colour.
Shape: When a line crosses itself or intersects with other lines to enclose a space, it creates a shape. Shape is two-dimensional and has height and width, but no depth.
Geometric Shapes - Circles, squares, rectangles, triangles. We see them in architecture and Mathematics.
Organic Shapes - Leaves, seashells, and flowers are organic shapes. We see them in nature and they have free flowing, informal and irregular characteristics.
Space: area around or within an object. Postivite/negative space
Positive shape - In a drawing or a painting the positive shape is the solid form.
Negative shape - In a drawing or a painting the negative shape is the space around the positive shape.
Texture: Quality of surface. How stuff feels
Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space.
Refers to the arrangement of opposite elements (light vs. dark colors, rough vs. smooth textures, large vs. small shapes, etc.) in a piece so as to create visual interest, excitement and drama.
Repeating visual elements such as line, color, shape, texture, value or image tends to unify the total effect of a work of art as well as create rhythm. Repetition can take the form of an exact duplication (pattern), a near duplication, or duplication with variety.
Unity occurs when all of the elements of a piece combine to make a balanced, harmonious, complete whole. Unity is another of those hard-to-describe art terms but, when it's present, your eye and brain are pleased to see it.
Rhythm: A movement in which some elements recurs regularly. Like a dance it will have a flow of objects that will seem to be like the beat of music.
Movement: is the path the viewer’s eye takes through the artwork, often to a focal area. It can be directed along lines, edges, shapes and color. Movement is closely tied to rhythm.
