How Effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary task?

I think that the product me and my group produced is very effective to the audience that it is aimed at. The music video in conjunction with the ancillary product uses and also goes beyond generic “indie’ conventions appealing to the audience we had aimed for.

The digipak I produced was based around the iconic elements from the music video, for example the rotoscoped image of Hewitson River (my main poster and cd insert), and the image of Hewitson River in the grave yard(CD cover). I decided to choose these screen shots because when our target audience sees the digipak, it will be instantly recognisable to anyone who has seen the video. The fact that I have used screenshots also enables continuity to the whole pack (video+ancillary).

As my digipak follows the conventions of a real digipak, I can see it being sold in stores such as HMV, Amazon, Play, ect. All of the brushes I have used on photoshop relate to the ‘vintage’ theme I was aiming for, and because vintage is ‘in’ right now, this would be an attention-grabbing element that could persuade someone to buy it, as vintage usually links with the ‘indie’ genre. During time of production of ancillary, Christmas was embarking, therefore I decided to mock up a Christmas addition digipak to give the customers another reason why they should purchase the album.

On my poster, I added reviews from companies such as ‘Q’ and ‘NME’. I decided to do this because both of these music magazines relate to the audience that I am aiming for, therefore I use their name almost like a selling point to buy the Hewitson River album, and because both organisations are reputable for providing good reviews, people will trust that the Hewitson River album will be as good as they say it is.

I think that both ancillary and the main product relate to the designated age group as within the products are elements of different ‘fads’, such as the vintage theme, however because vintage will always be vintage it will be timeless.

If I were to recreate my ancillary product, I would focus more on small details such as typography and brushes. In my opinion, I think that the typography continuity is not achieved as well as it could be, which takes away from the continuity of the whole product, which is a shame. I would make the limit the typography to perhaps just 3 fonts, ensuring continuity.I would also use more iconic brushes to highlight the vintage style better, as I think it could contain a stronger vintage look.

perhaps another thing I would change if I was to recreate the ancillary task again would be the layout of the digipak. During research and planning I analysed some real CD digipaks, such as a ‘Belle & Sebastian’ one, ‘The Cribs’, ‘Bombay Bicycle club’ and more. Many things these digipaks had in common was their use of unconventional layout. This represents the indie genre very well, as indie is often known for challenging generic conventions. I think this is something I would of liked from my digipak. With these problems aside, I do think that the brand I have produced is effective due to the support of the iconic screenshots of the video, and photography that creates the iconic stature of Hewitson River, and the video that represents the indie genre to the standard of what I was aiming for.
