How scientists approach a polar bear
Resources:
-polarbearsinternational.org
- bear tracker power point
First they:
-find a safe place to land the helicopter
-check for other bears
-make sure there is no way the bear
can get hurt by trying to escape
Then they:
-dart the polar bear, and
collect all possible data
Some clues to where a polar bear might be are:
-bear tracks
-pressure ridges; open water or thin ice where there's seal holes
How they are studying
-capturing and recapturing the same polar bear some time apart
- putting a GPS colar on a polar bear
Some methods scientists use to study polar bears:
-there are 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears left
-Males average wieght is 775 to 1,200 poounds
-females average wieght is 330 to 650 pounds
-They eat ringed and bearded seals
-Wild polar bears live to be from 15 to 18 years old
Gear and Euipment
Some of the gear they need to study polar bears:
-careful checklists
-tools; tested and retested
-Individual people (duh)
- Heavy snow gear
Data they collect on population dynamics
-Population size
-Reproduction
-Survival Rates
