It is typical for the group, they use a lot of futuristic high key lighting and are always shown in modern settings such as bleak houses, studios and a supermarket all with surreal elements.
The different lines of action create the meaning that it is not easy to separate yourself from someone who claims to have control.
The mixing of genres and the use of lighting for the futuristic effect allow postmodernity to become something that the audience is not used to experiencing.
The video is typical of the pop music genre, especially for boy bands as they always make themselves the seem the center of attention and incorporate some sort of modern technology or clothing styles which have not come into place in typical society yet, makes them stand out.
It includes many different genres which imply romance as well as action due which means that it creates dual meanings.
It does not show a natural everyday occurrence, a lot of the things that happen would not happen to the audience on a day to day basis. They will most likely not be able to relate due to the references and underlying meanings used.
It incorporates elements of the era which it was made and the society of that time such as the fashion and the technology which was coming into place as well as the accumulated wealth.
The lines of action such as the James Bond style train and car chase would be something that the viewer should be used to seeing and therefore add to their understanding that these scenes usually occur between two enemies or a villian and a 'goodie.'
Enjoyment- Different genres make it more exciting, creates a story, draws the viewer in as they want to know the fate of the male members.
The start scene and the references back to the serealism part of the men as puppets helps the viewer to understand who is in control and who isn't which is the overall message of the video.
Futuristic lighting and effects adds a sense of imagination and intrigues the viewer. The movement of the camera keeps the pace of the video fast so that the viewer does not loose interest.
The metanarrative such as future women being able to overpower men is evident through the horror like scene between the villian woman and one of the band members as she lets the dogs loose to chase him. This adds suspense for the reader but also enjoyment for their target audience which is most likely girls as the female is the one who takes the lead.
Not pretending to be realistic- The band are still shown as their natural selves but in miniature puppet form being controlled on strings by another, larger, person, train scene and lighting effects.
Hybridity- Comedy, satirical, romance, action.
Metanarratives- Gender steretyping, if woman is in control she must be crazy/ not normal. Males form a triablism as there are five of them ganging up on one woman. Women are becoming stronger (subverting). Future of society and the structure of relationships.
Intertextual references- Film: spies, assassins, James Bond, car chases. novel: Misery- Annie Wilkes.
Futurastic, finer life (sports cars) , theatre shows (innocence.) Sound: Nursery rhyme at the start.
Disjointed- Different lines of action which involve different members of the band in each clip.
Breaking of the fourth wall, engaging with the audience on a personal level, entering into the viewers world from hypereality.
Female character is alienated from the rest of the group as the men are constantly trying to escape her. Female has authority over men (stereotype is reversed) but in the end seems to be defeated. Men work as part of a team or pair, connected with one another.
