Young Couple Attends Commerce Movie Theatre

This image was taken in 1944. The year before, in 1943, E.T. (as Texas A&M University-Commerce was titled at the time) was chosen "to host a unit of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps and a company of men from the Army Specialized Training Program." The young woman is a member of the WAAC, and the young man is a member of the ASTP.

The theatre where they are posing was located in downtown Commerce.

Topic

Theme: The impact of World War II on the lives of East Texans.

What was life like for the people at home supporting the men sent abroad?

Young men who were members of the ASTP on campus were required to take certain classes. The ASTP program was formed to provide ready soldiers for the war effort. This photo was taken on the ETSTC in 1943 or 1944.

Children at Play

This image is from my family's personal collection. I don't know who the kids are, but I know that this photo was taken during the years of World War I.

Catching Some "z"s

Children Play Outside

Kids play outside in East Texas during the time period of World War II. My great-grandmother is probably the person who took this photograph.

An ASTP cadet takes a quick nap in a jeep in 1943. Jeeps were meant for war, but here a man takes a nap outdoors. There is a clash between the comfort of home and the alarm of realizing the world is still in the middle of a war.

Young Couple Poses

Verniece and her husband, Buster, pose for a couple's photo before he is dispatched for service in WWII. Verniece was the sister of my great-grandfather, Melburn Webb, who also served in Europe during WWII.

Flag Ceremony

The 1944 flag ceremony was performed by a naval reserve officer on the E.T. Campus.
