David Lloyd George: Lincoln was ‘one of those giant figures of whom there are very few in history, who lose their nationality in death.’

Parliament Square

The Parliament Square statue of Abraham Lincoln, erected in 1920 is a copy of the 1887 Standing Lincoln in Chicago's Lincoln Park by Augustus St. Gaudens. This statue was used to represent the liberal values in Britain in 1920 as Lincoln is a symbol of liberalism and freedom.

Tijuana, Mexico

In Tijuana in Mexico there is statue showing Lincoln destroying the chains of slavery. Therefore his image represents his achievement of issuing the Emancipation Proclamation rather than his Americanism.

Havana, Cuba

In Havana, Cuba, there is a bust

of Abraham Lincoln in the

Museum of the Revolution. This demonstrates that Lincoln is seen as a figure of freedom rather than Americanism.

This statue shows the same

design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens

as the statue in Lincoln Park in

Chicago.

(and in Parliament Square)

There is a statue of Lincoln in Edinburgh which is a replica of George Edwin Bissell's statue in Lincoln Park in Iowa. The Edinburgh monument is dedicated to the Scots who fought in the Union Army and it is the only memorial outside the United States to those who lost their lives in the Civil War.

The monument consists of two statues; a crouching, freed slave extends his arms in gratitude to an imposing Abraham Lincoln.

This statue celebrates Lincoln issuing the Emancipation Proclamation and defeating the Confederacy, which was seen in Scotland as a symbol of slavery.

Salzburg, Austria

There is a copy of Anna Hyatt Huntington’s “Abraham Lincoln on the Prairie" to be found in Salzburg.

The Austrian Minister of Education had originally seen this statue at the llinois State pavilion of the New York World’s Fair of 1963 and he admired it greatly. A copy was gifted to Austria and was erected in Salzburg behind the freshly renovated “Teacher’s House” downtown on July 28th 1965. The ceremony was honored by a telegram from president Johnson who emphasized the friendship between two countries.

Quito, Ecuador

Ecuador was grateful to Lincoln for requesting an ambassador to their country and erected this statue in memory of that request.

They saw Lincoln, therefore as a President that cared for their country.

Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C

The Lincoln Memorial is an American national monument which was finished in 1922. It is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. across from the Washington Monument. The architect was Henry Bacon, the sculptor was Daniel Chester French.
