Sculpting with clay can be difficult. Plastic clay slumps and any weight or tension on a joint can break it. You need SUPPORT!
You can use sponges, newspaper, wood dowels and toothpicks to support your piece during creation. If the support cannot be removed, ALWAYS make sure the material can burn and the gasses have an escape route. NO METAL
Sculpture that is "in" our world. We can walk around or view it from all angles.
- Break down your sculpture into segments and simple shapes.
- Use pinch pots, slabs, molds and/or coiling to create the form(s) and assemble where needed.
- Then use subtractive (cut or carve) and additive (slip and score) to develop dimension.
- Always hollow out thick pieces/parts
- Always use water/slip for very plastic clay and slip and score everything else.
