The current 'top ten' in the pop music charts on the 21st pf November 2016.

Pop music originated from the 'Western World' during the 1950s and the 60s as a softer version of the rock and roll genre. The use of the word 'pop' was to outline the popular appeal the music would have. Pop music can often borrow other elements from other genres - for example: urban, dance, rock, latin and country. The pop industry has generated a range of music icons throughout the years, including the likes of (in recent years): Justin Bieber, One Direction, Shawn Mendes, Little Mix, Ed Sheeran, Adele etc.

History of the Pop Music industry

The Beatles are the first band in which is associated with the pop music genre. Along side Michael Jackson they will never be forgotten for being the first people to 'blow away' the mainstream music genre of pop.

America's genre sales per year from 2004-2014 (in millions). Pop music is ranked 4th highest in 2014 with 27.71 million sales clearly evident of the large demanding audience.
