This presentation explores multiple forms of data in research as different "languages" that may be useful to inform policy and practice. It is important to be mindful of what kind of data is privileged as "evidence". Much of the call for evidence in the international community development world points to the strength of experimentally controlled, randomized research and evaluation designs. Yet, there are consequences for solely relying on this method as community engagement, participation, voices and narratives of change and social impact are often lost (Bodiford, Araail & Nchichupa, in press).
Post reflections on what struck you from the idea of data as multiple languages. How does this relate to your ideas about research?
Identify a social issue included in the MDGs or Post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda
Share data that tells a story about the social issue. The data can be shown in any format.
Post your data/story in the blog - www.designingresearch.com/#!connecting/
Respond to another person's post telling a similar story in a different format
If we think of research as a relationally engaged activity (McNamee & Hoskins, 2012), meanings and actions are a byproduct of coordination and human action, not objective, neutral or empirical truths (Gergen, 2009). This opens the possibility for engaging more forms of social processes for knowledge production and co-creating new possibilities.
In addition, supporting and empowering people to participate in the research process may lead to more just and locally relevant evidenced-based models of community development. The question then moves from what is the "evidence" for this form of community development to: "What new ideas, knowledge, possibilities and understandings are emerging? What are we creating together?" (Bodiford & Camargo-Borges, 2014). This question will help us consider multiple forms as data according to what is most useful, most generative of new possibilities.
You are invited to enjoy a journey through data as multiple languages focusing on the Millennium Development Goals and the development of the post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda (www.un.org/millenniumgoals/.
