Identifying the genre
The genre of the film is comedy this is displayed on the poster as one of the taglines identifies it straight away 'A comedy for the kid in all of us'. But also refers to everyone having their childhood still inside them which gives a comedy effect because people may not physically be a child anymore but they can still have fun and laugh.
The film poster is 13 going on 30 which was released on April 4th 2006. The genre of the film is a comedy about a 13 year old making a wish to be 'flirty thirty and thriving' and then her wish comes true and she finds herself in a 30 year olds body, but not just any body but what she will look like in the future. The poster is the main movie trailer poster because it contains information about the production personnel, the stars and distributors but also gives away some of the plot to encourage people to watch the film.
In terms of layout there is one main image of the main character on the right of the poster whilst the text is on the left which gives an organised and equal balance. There isn't a location background this could of been done because the audience wont get distracted from the information. The layout gives a insight of the plot and theme of the film such as the colours of the text and tagline. The poster is portrait which could add to the growing up effect.
A lot of the typography is not in capitals such as 'jennifer garner' which could of be done on purpose to add to the theme of a child turning into an adult but could also intend that she wrote it herself making it more personal.
The layout of the title is simple and easy to read, but also the use of the numbers instead of writing the actual word makes the title shorted and adds to the child effect again because children tend to write text shortened and in slang. The colours contrast well together but also the numbers are highlighted in purple which could have been done to emphasise the importance of time and age in this film.
Shot distance and framing
decisions
The image of the of the actress is set in the form
of a long shot which features the whole of her body
to display the strange things occurring and to create height again showing the growth. But also she is surrounded by a white background which could suggest she is in a closed frame and trapped within herself and doesnt have anyone else to help her get out of this mess. The shot is also a one person image which could suggest she is the main character and is the only person going through this change.
'For some, 13 feels like it was just yesterday. For Jenna, it was.' 'A comedy for the kid in all of us.'
It displays a light hearted attitude and that us as the audience still remember what its like to be 13 when we had carefree lives and lived life in the moment. But it also adds a comedy side as the 13 year old wants to grow up whilst most people want to be young again and relive there teenage years. But its attitude could give the audience hope that they can go back to their teenage years and still have fun no matter how they look and feel now.
The target audience for this film is teenage girls and there mums. I think this because of the neutral feminine colours used such as pink and purple. However it appeals to the audience because of the tagline revealing the plot which displays that its more of a chick flick. But also I think mums would like this film as they can watch the film with their daughters and bond.
It doesnt include the directors name on the poster apart from the institutional information, this maybe because it is only the film poster or want the actress to take credit for making the film more lifelike. But in the institutional information it does display who the director is, producers etc. It does not provide the certificate this may be because it wasnt decided at the time and will be notified later on when the film begins to be previewed on the television and cinema. The poster does list a website www.sony.com this could be so people can find out more about the film for example the sypnosis, maybe images from the set and further inforation such as the actors featured and music
The narrative is based on a young girl aged 13 turning into her future self at aged 30. This is evident on the poster as the image displays the girl being 30 years old but dressed like a child. The use of a dotted dress with bright girly colours gives a feminine but child like look because young girls tend to try and make themselves look attractive. But it also gives her a simplistic look.
Her facial expression displays confusion that she doesnt know what is happening which adds to the narrative as she will have to discover how to get back to the way she is. But also she is blowing a bubble with chewing gum which is a typical child like action which makes the audience suspicious of what the story line is about. But also shows she still has the mentality of a child.
But also they have used an effect so the actresses dress and hair is blowing in the wind which could suggest reality has hit her and possibly that it is destiny that this event was meant to happen.
The actresses body language is that of a child trying to be grown up such as trying on her mothers shoes and accessories to be older than she actually is. However the way her arms have been placed holding the bag gives her a sophisticated look. She is stood up in the shot which could also represent height and growing up.
The use of butterfly earrings and flower accessories suggest adds to the child effect showing she still has child like characteristics.
Her appearance and body language set off an enigma wanting the audience to find out why a grown woman is dressed way to young for her age and the events she has to go through.
The main colours used in the poster are pink, purple and white. The pink signifies romance, feminine qualities and friendship. The white contrasts well and represents coolness and is good to help fonts stand out. However purple is associated with magic which greatly describes what the film is about.
The colours are relevant to the genre because it makes the film look feminine and warm hearted meeting the target audience of females. But the colours add to the theme of comedy because it looks fun and energetic rather than dark strong colours what would be used in horrors.
13 going on 30 is seen as the female version of the hit movie Big. This could suggest it has a unique selling point because its meeting the needs of a female audience and seeing it from another persons perspective.
However to add to the USP is the use of actors/actresses as the directors have used some well known people such as Jennifer Garner this could grab attention.
I also think the plot is a unique selling point as it has been proved to be loved by large audiences but they added there own twist by using a teenage girl and different surroundings.
Director star info
and institutional info
There is no director name on the poster
apart from in the insitutional information
which also includes the producers etc.
The stars name is directly above the character to
display who she is but attract people to watch it as they may have seen her in another film.
