a mass of dust, stars and gas held together by gravity!
Most eliptical galaxies are in the shape of an oval and include many old stars. There can be up to ONE TRILLION stars in an eliptical galaxy! Oddly there is not alot of interstellar dust and matter. Stars orbit the center much like other types of galaxies but they move in more random directions. Also it is very rare for a new star to form in an eliptical galaxy.
Our own galaxy, The Milkey Way, is labeled as a spiral galaxy. Spiral Galaxies consist of a bulging center with spiral arms around it. Stars, planets, dust and gas lurk inside of these galaxies and rotate normaly around the center. Also older stars tend to bludge in the center of the galaxy like the sun.
Irregular galaxies do not take on a regular shape. Many of them are the results of galaxy collisions or near misses. Irregular galaxies are found in clusters. A type of an irregular galaxy is a starbust galaxy where many new stars form in a short amount of time.
The simple question has been wondered by manys all around the world, "What if their is other life/lifeforms in other galaxies?" I believe that the answer to this is yes, there IS life in other galaxies. What leads me to believe this is the fact that there are countless number of galaxies out there and some close to our own milkey way. Do you believe that there is life within other galaxies?
The Andromeda galaxy is the closed one to us; about 2.5 million light years away! This galaxy is considered a spiral galaxy just like our Milkey Way but its spirals are wider and it itself is brighter. In 2007 astronomers discovered red giant stars about 500,000 light years from Andromeda which helps support the fact that the galaxy is much larger than it was thought to be. Andromeda is visible from Earth sometimes, it will appear as a misty cloud In addition the luminous light around Andromeda is thought to overlap with the Milkey way. Cool right?
