Topics and Subtopics

Qualities of Good Information Writing

Every topic has subtopics, and there are ways subtopics "go together."

A book on gardening might contain planting, fertilizing, and then what? Harvesting. That book will be following the chronological structure.

A book on dogs and various types might be in a list format. While if the book focused on both the good and bad of having dogs for pets, it would be in a pros and cons organizational structure.

Ways Nonfiction Can be Organized

Organization is key!

  • Sections are focused on one subtopic
  • Has ideas, not just facts
  • Includes a variety of examples, such a stories, quotes, statistics
  • Uses "expert language": words and phrases important to the topic, with definitions for many
  • Some information taught using words, some taught with images, captions, or charts.
  • Chronological
  • Ranked list
  • Pros and cons
  • Similarities and Differences
