Mental Manipulation
These two films show subjects mentally broken down by authorities.
Machines Fail
In 'A Clockwork Orange' the state wants to transform their violent killers into harmless civilians.
In 'Full Metal Jacket' the state wants to transform their harmless civilians into violent killers.
Kubrick shows contrasting examples of brainwash, but believes they share the same terrible end result for its subjects - suicide.
Secrets Kill
The consequences of secrets or classified information were demonstrated in the majority of Kubrick films
Kubrick Showed many of his characters having to deal with mechanical or medical failures in his films.
Most of these failures cause either a character's death, or near death.
- Jack not telling Wendy there was a murder suicide at the Overlook [The Shining]
- Alice and Bill Harford hiding their sexual attractions for other people [Eyes Wide Shut]
This shows that Kubrick was critical of human dependency on technology, that all these new 20th century machines made to make life easier for man actually make man weaker, and in the end easier to kill.
- A nation's nuclear launch capabilities [Dr. Strangelove]
- The discovery of alien life, and crew members all being trained separately [2001: A Space Oddesey]
Late Life
Dr Strangelove
- If the Soviet Union had quickly revealed that they made the doomsday machine, the maybe Crazy Ripper wouldn't have launched an attack
2001: A Space Odyssey
- If the crew were told the truth about the monolith, Hal wouldn't have been so paranoid and they could have all made it to Jupiter alive
Eyes Wide Shut
- Dr Harford's desire for revenge almost costs him his life with the HIV+ prostitute and the long island sex cult
The Shinning
- If Wendy had ever know the truth about the Overlook, then she would likey not agree to the move
Full Metal Jacket
- If US forces listened to warnings about the impending attack, then it likely wouldn't have been as successful
- Propaganda lead to over confidence in the US military [Full Metal Jacket]
- Stanley was married 3 times and had 2 children.
- It was later reviled how close him and Steven Spielberg were after he suffered a fatal heart attack in his sleep in 1999.
- Kubrick would go on to film "A.I." which even though was directed by Spielberg is considered a Kubrick film and one of his greatest.
- Kubrick had always personally thought "Eyes Wide Shut" was his greatest work.
