Places to visit

• Nunnery of Santa Clara: built in the 16th century. Nowadays it is the working place of the Town-Hall.

The city where everything started

• Church of S. Miguel: place where D. Afonso Henriques was baptized.

• Castle of Guimarães: built by the Countess Mumadona to protect the monastery of Santa Maria;

• Paços dos Duques de Bragança: built in the 15th century by the first Duke of Bragança. Is one of the most visited museums in the country and is the official residence of the President of the Republic when he is in the city.

• Statue of D. Afonso Henriques: the first king of Portugal.

• Largo do Toural: is considered the heart of Guimarães. After a remodelling this place presents the city plan designed on the floor.

Culture

• In the 10th century, a rich countess of galician origin, the Countess Mumadona, founded, on the rural property of Vimaranes, a monastery and a castle.
• At the end of the 11th century, came to reside to this castle Dona Teresa, daughter of the King of León, and her husband, the count D. Henrique, a French noble.
• Here was born Afonso Henriques, son of Dona Teresa and D. Henrique, who later became the first king of Portugal.

• Area - 240.95 km ²;
• Population - 158 124 inhabitants (2013);
• Number of parishes - 69;
• Lord Mayor - Domingos Bragança;
• District - Braga;
• Club - Vitória Sport Club (VSC).

• Gualterianas: festivity in honour to S. Gualter. The first one was in 1906 and they are marked by the Gualteriana March;

• Nicolinas: is the students festivity. It has the duration of one week and the most important events are "O Pinheiro" and "As Maçazinhas";
