A2 Media Evaluation!!!1

After my uncles band had thwarted all my efforts to get them in the same place at the same time to attempt taking any pictures, my only option was to choose a copyright free Jamendo track. It took a while to find a good song, but I eventually settled on a Convergence : Silence, which is a Nu-metal/Electronica group from Italy.

http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/7328

My inspiration included some videos done by Chris Cunningham for “Aphex Twin”, where he uses keyed out screens and various post-apocalyptic after effects.

The main footage, i.e. the stop motion was influenced by Radiohead’s music video for “there there”, which is not only an amazing song, but has the video to match with a linier (ish) story line with an escalation towards the end, unlike Chris Cunningham’s videos which are very non-chronological.

I also used quite a few pull-focus’ of which I was influenced by the use of the technique in a lot of Tool music videos.

To sum up the storyline in one sentence : “Girl finds a possessed and evil computer screen which invites her to a leisurely stroll only to suck her in and trap her inside!”.

I used Chroma Key to cut out all the green inside the edges of the screen. Then i put the live-action on top of the stop-motion.

Then i had to make sure that the live action clips would fit in the screen, which was the most time consuming part, as you have to go through each shot and resize/rescale and move the clip. This was made harder by trying to track the motion of very rough stop-motion animation.

Lastly i added a grading over top of all the footage to give it the "post apocalyptic feel" that i was going for.

This one shot in particilar i was very pleased with, as i managed to key in both the screen and the reflection. Although the reflection is backwards, but the shot lasts less than a second anyway, so i don't anyone will notice!

I had to take ALOT of pictures!!!

Q1 : In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Andrew Goodwin is the main dude to listen to when considering forms and conventions of music videos!

The relationships between the lyrics/music and the footage are strong and the visuals are cut fairly cleanly with the music.

Using a vague narrative is quite common in Metal genre videos, but is usually punctuated with studio footage of the band with their instruments.

The video does not promote the artists “star image”, but promotes the ideology of suggesting that the connotations of the lyrics as they are illustrated are more important, than how many records will be sold if the video reaches the top of the charts. A closely balanced ratio of style and substance.

It is, for the most part, an original concept. The only intertextual references being an almost pastiche of Chris Cunningham’s Aphex Twin video, with the carrying of the TV.

Q2 : How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts ?

My video and poster are supposed to promote the band and the bands image. And the digi-pack is the only way that the (fictional) band "The discordant" can make any money.

The digipack and poster reflect the music video with the use of the bionics on the band members with the use of the "entity" in the computer screen.

The spirals and "scribbly pentigrams" are associated with the rough genre of metal. And the spirals are attempting to conote the volume of the music.

Q3 : What have you learned from your audience feedback ?

Youtube comments

this video is stylistically, amazing, on point, and epically screaming out the genre of the song. the editing is insane! really well done on that, very impressive. the narrative and song work side by side to add even more emphasis on the success of this video. the filters use reinforce the genre and the mood and atmosphere that can be felt throughout the entire video. everything links together really well, well done, an excellent video!

Really cool and edgy music video, can definatly spot inspiration from Chris Cunningham love the look and effects added to the filming well done Andrew =)

This is so good! Did you take inspiration from the "Come to Daddy" video by Chris Cunningham? Looks great, I love your use of editing, it goes really well with the genre of music.I'm really impressed. Good job! (:

Wow Andrew this video is pretty amazing!

You're very talented with this haha.

I really like how you've used the stop motion, all the images on it are quite creepy but at the same time really cool.

It's not the average video you see these days, but it's good that it's not your average conventional music video. You've got it all up to the fast beat of the song.

A great success :)

You should take this as a job!

I like the effect of stop motion and live action together. The low saturation and gritty look really work well with the genre. The music video as a whole is pretty awesome (:

Okay, I do love your video and for media's sake I'll compliment it:

-The tempo of the track (and genre) matches the images perfectly

-The editing is effective

-The video is realistic to audiences

Although I'm being nice now, I'm never admitting it in real life..

Well done!

This is excellent, Andrew.

The whole concept is really great and definately represents the chosen genre.

I really like the low saturation and brown filter you've used. I am very impressed with the TV static effect, too.

Overall, a very impressive music video, which clearly represents this genre of music. I could see you making horror movies! x

Turned out pretty epic! Was well worth the effort of so many photos.

Loled at the chain though :L

If not a wide age range for my survey responces, there was at least a fairly even split between gender, which gives the results some degree of reliability.

And people actually like my video! Although, this could be due to me only getting awnsers from close friends, meaning they could be biased and/or trying not to hurt my feelings...

They got the genre right, as Metal/Electronica is the genre of the track.

By the looks of it, i did a good job of editing those awkward stop-motion Avi's to the beat and got the style of music video spot on with the genre.

I've clearly got away with going against Goodwins theory, which states that there should be close-ups of the artist.

I expected people to be reminded of Chris Cunninghams work, as most of the respondee's were fellow media students, but "The Prodigy's : Warriors Dance" was a surprise.

Having the T.V. effect green instead of blue is a pretty good idea, especially seeing as i was using a computer screen, as if it was a reference to The Matrix.

I know i could have done a better job with the tracking of the green screen, but the time was against me...

And i can't really help my sisters poor acting skills!

I just lost the game... :(

Q4 : hOW DID YOU USE NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES ?

in the research and planning stage, i used various websites to look at famous music videos, most notably Youtube, but "Bug video" was also a great help as it shows a huge selection of video's that are not mainstream, which i would not have found otherwise.

During the construction i used various peices of software, such as: Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Sony vegas and MS paint..

When planning my music video i looked at after effects tutorials on http://www.videocopilot.net/ for the track motion effect which i would have used to more effect if i had time to key out the backgrouds.

for my audience feed back i used Facebook to distribute links to a survey that i made on Survey Monkey.

Because i really don't like the sound of my voice, i decided not to do any recording. Instead i used this AMAZING website where you can make everything zoom in and out and do other crazy stuff..

Like, go upsidedown !!!
