You may have heard of the 1976 olympic boycott

in South Africa due to the apartheid law.

This was boycotted much worse, led by the United

States. This was due to a 9 year war in Afghanistan

led by the soviets (Russian Armed Forces) Only 80 nations competed, which is miniscule compared to this year's 200+.

Russia excel in a wide variety of sports. They have a whopping total of 323 medals ever since their first olympics in 1900.

Their flag bearer for this year was Maria Sharapova.

Being the largest country in the world, Russia was a big competitor in the Olympic Games. Russia finished in 3rd place behind USA and China, having 24 golds, 26 silvers and 32 bronze medals. Their total medal count is 82. They had 438 athletes competing in this year's olympics and first entered the Olympic Games in 1900. Their 3 best events are track and field, wrestling , and shooting.

Russian History

Russia has 18 medals in track and field events in

2012. Aliya Mustafina has 1 gold , 1 silver and 2 bronze medals in gymnastics. Surprisingly she is only eighteen years of age!

Russia was founded in the year 862 by the viking Rurik. He found the first Russian tribe in Novgorod. Russia had a large presence in WW2. Joseph Stalin created a pact with Nazi leader Adolf Hitler - a non-aggression pact. Russia established this because they knew Germany was becoming powerful. However Hitler broke the pact on the 22nd of June, 1941, by invading soviet-held territories. This resulted in a massive war on the Eastern Front, east of Germany between the Axis and Allies. Here are some of the axis countries:

Germany Croatia

Romania Italy

Hungary Bulgaria

Finland Slovakia

Tatyana Lysenko, Russian hammer throw gold medallist
