  • Build on ideas from the day. For PEI that includes:
  • campaigning for science in the #Post2015 framework;
  • expanding support mechanisms for scientists in Africa
  • confirming partners to take #ScienceAfrica series across the continent

How can you get involved?

What did they say?

#ScienceAfrica

We collected videos from around the world to get us thinking...

"Little or no 'culture of science' in Africa, and that starts young"

Take a peek

"Need for participatory approaches that are inclusive and collaborative - science is important to all of us"

In July 2013 we brought over 100 people interested in science, technology and education to talk about Africa

"Lack of evidence to convince policy-makers of need for investment in science"

Tables worked together to suggest their ideas of barriers to science...

"Recognise indigenous knowledge and inspire African-owned science"

"Only 1% of the world's scientists live in Africa but even from that tiny number many are now either not in academia or are burdened with administrative duties"

"Africa has a long history of science - we need to rediscover and empower it not import Western science to Africa"

"Human and physical infrastructure - not enough science facilities well maintained and to a high standard"

The panel got us started...

"Collaboration, participation, ownership and youth key to scientific independence" Kanyhama Dixon-Fyle

'Economic independence can only come about through science technology innovation' Kasirim Nwuke, UNECA

"Africa for too long in too many areas has been dependent upon the rest of the world....scientific independence is part of its economic emancipation." Rt Hon Lord Boateng

"Scientific capacity building is often still not working. We are seeing not just brain drain from Africa, but brain circulation, as people don't have the research facilities in their home countries" Prof Peter Piot

And to ask them a question -

Africa's scientific independence: how do we get there?

"You can not sleep on a borrowed mat - Africa needs to take control of its own science agenda" Mr Allin Byll-Cataria

Africa needs to own its science agenda

@PlanetEarthInst

  • Africa has a proud history and the origins of science
  • The continent needs to embrace this agenda for sustainable development
  • Buy-in at every level is needed

www.planetearthinstituteworldwide.org

Governments must step up

Thanks to all our wonderful partners

  • Every government needs to champion science
  • African Governments need greater collaboration with one another and to recognise dangers of national self interest on these issues
  • Legislators should be shown the value of science/tech to their constituents

#ScienceAfrica

Science needs to be recognised and celebrated

5 key themes emerged

  • 'Culture of science' too often lacking - need more public champions
  • Make science relevant - it's a public good not an insulated sector
  • Change mindset from young age that science is accessible to all

#ScienceAfrica

Technology has to be central to scientific development

  • Technology has key role in Africa's sustainable development agenda
  • Technology crucial to education and developing a culture of science
  • Youth demographic and mobile proliferation make technology central to future

What next?

International partnerships must be genuine and collaborative

#ScienceAfrica

  • Not about aid or importing scientific development models from the North
  • International community mindset needs to change to genuine partnership
  • Crucial local partners feel empowered and in control - particularly once specific project is over
