'The Man Who Can't Be Moved'

The song, like ours, has a quite dramatic tone and creates a sad atmosphere. 'The Script' is a band which is very similar to Ray Jones. The lead singer is not wearing stylised clothes, he is dressed simple and casual, with jeans, jacket, T-shirt and shoes. His way of dressing can create a closer connection to the audience as it is very common, like an ordinary person style, and it may also attract a wider audience containing older people since he is wearing shoes. It also suits the tone of the song, as if the artist is feeling demotivated to dress up in a stylised way.

The street and the city used as setting suits the genre and it also helps to create an atmosphere of loneliness with all those people around him and he is alone in the streets. It also makes it look like he is looking for something, which adds meaning to the lyrics that sing about a lost lover.

The base track of the band playing in a place that looks like an abandoned parking garage, with some shadows and some lighting coming in, it gives a sense of isolation and it makes it look more dramatic. The band playing instruments is conventional of the genre.

There is a variety of different camera shots to make the video look more engaging, but mostly it is consisted of close ups and median close ups to focus on the artist and his facial expressions (especially since the genre is not dancing so the artist do not have any kind of dancing performance). As the song is sad we can see the emotions through the artist's expressions. We are planning to use some variety of shots too, but mostly we want to focus on the use of mid shots, close ups and median close ups to promote our artist and to show his emotions through facial expressions, and also because it helps to sell his music rather than his 'made up artistic image' only (like for example some pop artists such as Lady Gaga may be more appealing due to their style rather than their music). In The Script music video there is also some camera movement that goes along with the romantic beat of the song, which we might try to use.

The editing of this music video goes together with the beat (like all music videos) and it gets much faster towards the end of the video because it is where the climax is built. There is less cuts when the artist is singing, to create the sad atmosphere of the lyrics. The editing at the end is what we particularly like about the music video and would like to replicate in ours. Not only the cuts gets faster, as there is the use of fast motion and time lapse to show the time passing (ellipsis) and create a sense of urgency, as if the artist is waiting for a very long time and the waiting is endless. We want to use the same fast motion to build up the climax of our song and also to create a city scenario, giving the impression of business and a fast life in the city, which will emphasise the loneliness and the melancholic atmosphere of being a stranger in London portrayed in the lyrics of 'The City'. Another editing technique to consider from The Script music video is the use of dissolve as transitions, which helps to create a dramatic effect.

This music video can be classified as amplification because it creates the same atmosphere of the song and it adds meaning to it. Our music video will also be amplification and create the song atmosphere, presenting the artist lonely in a busy city like London to portray his feelings of being a 'stranger' in a new town. In The Script's music video, he sings about being waiting for his love to come back, and in the music video he walks around the city as if he is looking for something and then he sits down and waits. The artist acts both as performer and as character. In our music video we also want to have our artist performing and as a 'character' who is wandering alone around London. Therefore, like in The Man Who Can't Be Moved, our artist will have base tracks singing in the city and at the same time we want to have him just walking in the city as if he's lost.

The genre of 'The Script' is pop rock, which is very close to Ray Jones' genre indie pop. The leather jacket is a convention of the rock genre, and the use of instruments like guitars as well. The music video is simple which makes the song more touching, but, it does have some extra production (not very common in indie music videos since 'indie' is a short name for 'independent'). Like for example the idea of having a TV journalist interviewing him, or some very wide shots of the city, a shot of lightning, some really long time lapses like the sun rising, a policeman. This type of more 'expensive' production is a convention of the pop genre. We do not have such budgets to use in our music video but we will try to make it look well produced through good quality footage, good editing and with a nice London setting.
