THOMSTA PRODUCTION EVALUATION PRESENTATION
Some of our inspirations came from the film Psycho, for example the our media production is in black and white. We challenges forms and conventions by the costume we chose to use in our media production. We used a white shirt to represent the characters 'good' side. White normally portrays purity and innocence. The white is also used as a signal for when Dawn is in her normal state of mind and is aware of what she is doing.
We used the black shirt to represent Dawn's 'bad' side. Black normally portrays evil and mystery. This was used to convey how Dawn changed from a good, genuine child to a distorted, psychotic mindset, this contrasts with the white shirt and works well in the split screen and black and white effect. We used a black, long skirt because this was deemed respectable in the era we chose. This also portrays evil mind set and conveys Dawn's unhinged persona.
Psycho
Psycho is an example of a psychological thriller.
The codes and conventions used are:
Fast tempo music when something dramatic is going to happen, which creates an edgy feeling to the atmosphere and leaves the audience full of suspense.
Things that plays with the audiences mind. For example shapes and diagrams with mixed messages or twisted intentions and also the film being in black and white.

Effect isn't working!!
This is my first Preliminary Task. This includes shot reverse shot and matching on action.
one of the problems we encountered when we was filming our preliminary task was to find a suitable place to film it. All the places we wanted to use was already taken by our peers, as the location was in our school.
we resolved this problem by going around the school to find a free room, which was the school hall.
In the end we realized that the school hall was the best place to film our preliminary task because the lighting wasn't too bright of dim.
We had seen this effect being used in the channel 4 series misfits and decided that it would fit well in our piece. As we didn't have the same technology available that was required to give the effect a high quality finish, we had to use our own basic knowledge of software and the cameras available to recreate this effect. To do this we filmed our main character staring straight ahead at the camera and another with her shaking her head, then we speeded up the footage of her shaking her head and overlapped this with the footage of her staring into the camera. When we first uploaded this onto the timeline in Adobe Premier Pro the overlap was difficult to see resulting in us changing the opacity of both sections of footage.
By using a young female as our main character we had already drawn in a young audience, the music that we chose would indicate to the viewer that our film was a thriller and therefore would attract any fans of thriller films.

As part of our primary research we created a questionnaire
to find out what our target audience wanted to see in our media production. We asked a selective group of people to complete our questionnaire.
This is our results
The opening to our thriller is aimed at teenagers particularly and therefore everything within the film is how teenagers perceive a thriller movie. The main character in our opening is also played by a young female and so,the audience can relate to her.
Looking back on our preliminary task, I have learnt how to shoot more camera shots and how to use them to gain an effect. I have also learnt how direct more effectively.

We researched different media institution that would be suitable to distribute our media product and has made thriller movies.
Twisted Pictures was one of the institution that we researched.
Twisted Pictures have distributed horrors and thrillers therefore we think that they might distribute our media product because the hsve distributed our genre of film before, which also means they got experience.
20th Century Fox's most popular global institution.
They have distributed many film including X-men, Ice Age and one of the most recent film The Iron Lady.
They also produced famous TV shows such as The Simpsons and Family Guy. Fox has also partnered up with a wide range of media institutions therefore they would be the best distributer to distribute our media product.
We used a white shirt to represent the characters 'good' side. White normally portrays purity and innocence. We also used this type of clothing because it was worn in the era we set our film opening in.The white is also used as a signal for when Dawn is in her normal state of mind and is aware of what she is doing..
We decided to use one skirt instead of having one of both colours because the scenes with the white shirt used did not need a skirt.
This also portrays evil mind set and conveys Dawn's unhinged persona

At the beginning of this course we researched the
codes conventions of a thriller movie. We gathered this information from the Internet, books and magazines.
The conventions of the thriller genre are to do with sound and editing. e.g quick cuts , fast pace and camera angle changes, music that gives tension and is pasty when appropriate. It can be to do with lighting, especially the use of shadow. mirrors and stairs are also conventions of thriller movies.
Psychological Thrillers plays with the audience's mind, build up suspense by the use of building, effective use of close ups and creates a series of questions in the audience's mind.

When creating our song on the software called 'Reason'
With this software, we were able to create our score. There were many instruments to choose from which was good for us to explore and experiment, we decided to use ‘music box’ because it suited our ‘thriller’ and ‘eerie’ theme. We made up a melody on a synthesiser which could be inserted into a computer and then we copied and pasted that melody to make a continuous song. We thought it sounded rather repetitive so we experimented with a higher octave and different notes. When we finished our score, we recorded the song using software called ‘AV voice changer 4.0 diamond’ so we could convert it into an mp3 file.

This questionnaire helped us get ideas for our thriller opening and also helped us improve our initial ideas. Through our results we have learn that our thriller clip should appeal to girls/women from ages 15-19.
