Lighting

There are not any specific types of camera and shots that apply to a certain genre of music however, some shots are more common in other genres than some. For example, close shots of the instruments being played is an extremely common form for an alternative rock music video (if there is a performance involved). Another common shot that is used in alternative genres of music is the low shot of the band performing of the protagonist in the narrative. this allows the artist to show they have the power and are superior to the audience and their fans. The close shots allow for the audience to relate and feel connected to the members of the band or artist. This then allows the audience to infer they are wanted and enjoy music video more, feeling apart of the music video allows for the audience to feel involved in their favored artists music and creativity.

My music does not involve any performing of the band themselves, however it does involve the close shots of the protagonist. A common convention of an alternative music video is that not to have a narrative, but to have a concept based music video, in which doesn't follow the lyrics of the music video but has a ulterior motive and a theme and story to tell beyond the lyrics of the song. For example, in my music video i read the lyrics as being along and with the tempo staying similar throughout until the end, i felt that it would work to tell a story based on an equilibrium, in which begins with her alone and the loneliness ends up getting too much and as the tempo builds and changes towards the end, she is loosing the will to be able to cope with being alone, in the end (the final shot) is a tracking shot of her in the dark running away from a car signifying her life and responsibilities.

In most rock or alternative rock, the bands and the era in which the band were popular have strong costume and make-up designs which allow people to identify them easily. for example, 'Kiss' are known for their white make-up and spiky hair. Whereas, 'Green Day' are known for their torn shirt sleeves and their black eyeliner. Lead singer, Shirley Manson. With costume and make-up my music video challenges the common codes of alternative music videos. With the theme of dark ripped and relatively smart clothing falling into this category. My decision to dress the protagonist 'Shirley Manson' in a blue dress wasn't a common convention. However, with Manson's known variation of red hair tones, the protagonist that was portraying Manson in my music video also had to have red hair, therefore sections of her hair are red. This allows the audience to recognize and follow that this is Manson in a Garbage music video.

High Key Lighting

Lighting is extremely important in every genre of music. For example, natural lighting in Rihanna's 'We Found Love', in the introduction there is a non-diegetic voice over as well as extremely dimmed lighting. Here we as the audience are able to connote that the music video has a sad empathetic theme, to do with love and heartbreak. with the dimmed, dull lighting this lets the audience connote a sad song. Whereas in the music video 'Happy' by Pharell the lighting it fake and is very strong. Many shots may be outside but the 'natural' lighting a=has been enhanced to show a strong happy music video that has extremely strong continuity with the lyrics of the song, allowing for the audience to understand the narrative of the different songs and their intended effects on their different audiences. Fake lighting such as red or blue tones are also used commonly, for example in 'Who you are' by Jessie J, the blue reflects the sad and dark tones of the lyrics and the deeper meaning behind the music video.

However, lighting in the alternative rock genre often is dark and dimmed. However, lighting is not often based on the genre of the bad but the themes and attitudes in which the band's song is presenting. High key lighting is generally used in music videos involving a narrative because enabling the audience to denote clearly what is happening and to not struggle with viewing the story line or the concept based narrative. However, the most common of high key and low key lighting in the alternative rock genre, would be low key. For example, 'The prodigy' Firestarter.

Overall, my music video 'Night Drive Loneliness' challenges the more common general conventions of using low key lighting, however, for a concept based narrative music video, using high lighting is more common therefore I have followed the general conventions in most parts of my music video. Furthermore, whilst most of my music video was filmed in high key lighting, towards the end of the equilibrium, where the calmness was getting disturbed i as filming int e dark and in the end of the music video there is low key lighting, adding a dark ending to the music video. Much like Todorov's theory of equilibrium, however there is no new equilibrium formed at the end of the music video 'Night Drive Loneliness'.

Low Key lighting

Generally in alternative rock music videos, the speed of the shots match the speed of the tempo and the music. The cuts of the video match the beats of the song. In this way my music video 'Night Drive Loneliness' uses the conventions and forms of the editing in an alternative rock genre. the beats match the cuts of the clips. Although the timing took a very long time, i managed to cut all the clips to the beat of the song. Throughout the son 'Night Drive Loneliness' there is a similar beat and tempo of the beat therefore, most of the editing is similar and the clips are similar lengths. Furthermore, towards the end of the music video, (at 4:45 minutes the pace of the music begins to increase at a dramatic effect, therefore I increased the speed of the clips by 50% and instead of most of them lasting either 4 or 8 beats they are lasting two and the frames are close shots of the protagonist making direct eye contact with the camera, this allows the audience to feel intimidated and connote that the tension is building and something is either about to happen or a sense of equilibrium is about to take place, such as in Todorov's theory.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Starlight

Often in alternative rock music video's in the 2000's may have been for the setting to be in a room with false lighting, a common convention and form in the 90's was for the band to be preforming in a natural environment; such as a beach or desert. For example, 'Temple of dog' Hunger Strike, set on the beach and the opening shot being a wide shot of a lighthouse, implying the rest of the music video was going to be set around the lighthouse and a beach. Much like in my music video in which begins with a reflective close shot of the wing mirror of a car, showing the wide shot of the road behind, insinuating that the music video will be about a road and a car, this allows continuity between the sound (song title 'Night Drive Loneliness') and the visuals. Also the music video 'Starlight' by Muse, they have set it in the middle of the ocean on a boat. With wide shots for the first 24 seconds of the music video, there is also low shots of the band standing on a wide plane of the docking ship. The low angle is a common convention of the alternative rock bands; giving the band power and making a hierarchy between the listeners and the band. Often this would occur in the setting of a band on a stage performing in front of their crowd and fans. However, with a performance/narrative music video much like this, the audience relates more therefore, when adding low shots this has a large effect on the listeners and watchers of 'Starlight'.

Also in 'When we were young' by The Killers, In this music video the audience denotes in he beginning that there is a female and she is wearing along white dress. I took some inspiration from the beginning of 'When we were young' for my own music video. Involving a female protagonist alone, and there are tracking shots an wide shots of her walking in a desert. Again wt the outdoor setting such as my own.

Overall my music video matches the general conventions for the setting of an alternative rock music video in the late 90's. In which was my intended idea due my target audience being men aged 35-40, due to Garbage having most of their hits in the late 90's most of their fans now will be older. Allowing my music video to match the general conventions of an alternative music video in Garbage's prime time.

Digipak and Magazine Advertisement

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ff0oWESdmH0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Introduction to the General Conventions

As well as making the music video, there was also a digipak and magazine advertisement to create. both of these required continuity from the music video allowing the audience and the fans of Garbage to recognize that the products belong to the song and the album 'Night Drive Loneliness'. For example, the main plot of the music video involves a female in a long blue dress. Therefore, it would be necessary to involve the blue dress in both the digipak and magazine advert. This was not only following and using the general conventions of alternative rock genre, but following the music industries conventions worldwide. It is highly uncommon for an artist to have different designs for their ancillary prodcuts.Several artists, such as they killers have exactly the same design on both, however, I decided to change the design yet have the female in the blue dress on both, allowing the audience to connote the connection if they see the products in different areas of their lives and at different times. However, to make the ancillary products connect more I also added 'Garbage' to the top of each making it clear to the audience the bands name and where to find them (in the case of the magazine, putting their web address on the cover).

NO. 1

Alternative rock music videos are most well known for being performance videos with many low shots and the band being the main focus. Many bands such as; 'The Anthem' by Good Charlotte involves a performance. However, with most alternative rock music videos having simple background, generally in a room or with a plain background (possibly with their symbol on for synergy) 'The Anthem' by good Charlotte is filmed outside, much like in my music video 'Night Dirive Loneliness' by Garbage, in which my not be a performance but it is filmed outside using the natural light.

Nevertheless, throughout this prezi I will be talking about the generla conventions of alternative rock music videos, involving the mis-en-scene, editing and camera work, all of which are put together ot create the music videos that I will be analyzing and have created in my A2 year.

Garbage

For my A2 media product and ancillary products I chose to create a music video for the band 'Garbage'. Garbage is made up of 3 men and a women in which formed in 1993. the members include; Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker and Butch Vig.

Garbage are an alternative rock band, which follow many of the general conventions that follow this genre.

Alternative Rock

'Alternative' came from the genres distiction from mainstream rock, expressed in primarily a distrorted guitar sound ans transgressive lyrics and there is also a sense of negative iconography and defiant attitude. It decended from punk rock.
