simple subject: The noun or pronoun.

-The energetic dog ran to its owner.

First, find out what the subject is doing/does/did. Most of the time, it comes after the subject, but if the sentence is imperative, like "Look at that!", the subject would be "(you) understood". It may even be at the beginning of the sentence: "Thinking the answer was incorrect, I erased it."
Example: The dog barked at the mailman.
What is the dog doing? It's barking at the mailman. This means the predicate is "barked at the mailman."

The subject is normally found at the beginning of a declarative sentence. By getting rid of the prepositional phrases, you will easily be able to spot the subject.
Example: After the baseball game, the girl went home.
To find the subject, simply eliminate "After the baseball game". Now, you only have "the girl" left, which is your subject (went is a verb, so it obviously cannot be a subject).
A predicate usually follows the subject and says what the subject is or does.
Example: The boy went to school.
The predicate would be "went" because it is telling what the subject ("boy") did.
A subject is a person, place, or thing that does (or is) anything the predicate says.
Example: The girl went to the park.
simple predicate: Just a complete verb (along with any helping verbs).
I am going to the grocery store.
complete predicate: A simple predicate with the all the other words that state the actions of the subject.
I had waffles for breakfast.
compound predicate: Two or more predicates.
The little boy opened the door and fell asleep on his bed.
In this case, "girl" would be the subject of the sentence because the predicate ("went") is saying what she did.
