Major Works

Why study fairy tales?

"Children's and Household Tales" by the Brother's Grimm (Europe)

The Stories of Hans Christian Anderson (Europe)

"The 1,001 Nights" (Middle East)

"Mother Goose Tales" by Charles Perault (Europe)

  • Fairy tales are often used to explain the origins of certain customs, traditions and beliefs within a given culture

  • Similarly, they take us back in time and contextualize history in a more "animated" way

  • They are "food" for our imaginations (just think of how many Disney classics are based on fairy tales...they're really quite entertaining!

Common Features of Fairy Tales

Overview of Fairy Tales

Just like myths, there is no one "correct" version of the fairy tale. As such, they nicely illustrate one of the major themes of this unit: the idea that there is, "no better, only different" (in terms of stories as well as people, traditions and cultures).

That being said, here are a few features common to many fairy tales:

  • They often begin with the classic line, "Once upon a time..." or
  • They take place long ago in the past
  • They use magic or elements of the fantastic to explain that which cannot be explained in other terms (actions of nature/fate)
  • They have characters that are "make believe" or exaggerations of reality (like giants, mermaids, trolls, elves, dragons, etc.).
  • The difference between "good" and "evil" characters is fairy clearly defined.
  • The plot(s) usually revolve(s) around a problem to be solved (conflict)
  • They usually have happy endings
  • They are often told to teach a lesson/moral
  • Fairy Tales are a form of storytelling that began in medieval Europe.

  • They are similar to myths in that they are used to teach lessons/explain the origin(s) or certain traditions and/or unexplainable natural phenomena

  • They usually involve imaginary creatures/character archetypes and some type of magic.
