How do you imagine the future of art and culture in society?

How might transmedia experience/materials shape the future?

In the future the syllabus for this class would need to be updated to have four new module questions. Here are the topics that our group would focus on in 2030:

Minority Report Clips:

1. walking through the mall

3. “What is the aesthetic of our time?”

Video: Star Wars I: A New Hope

4. How are technological tools used in the creation, production, and dissemination of art and culture today (2030), and compare these means to 20 years before?

1. “How can we, as art administrators, ensure preservation of authentic art practices while sustaining face to face interaction? Focus on curating, collecting, critiquing, teaching, doing, etc. in your responses.”

2. "What are the politics of participation in 2030, especially in relation to the technological advances? How do power and social practice intersect in this new 'metaverse'?

  • each person carries his or her own set of criteria in judging and critiquing art but there will likely be new trends in 2030

  • transmedia will have become a part of our daily lives

  • more types of art will be considered "original" work; Girl Talk is a great example of what is questioned as "original" now but will likely be accepted in the year 2030

  • originality and success will be based more upon the process of creating the art

  • there will be more tools that are based on technology, rather than the traditional tools

2. the gap store

  • The gap between have and have-nots will have risen

  • One giant media conglomerate in 2030 is likely

  • Amateur arts practices will thrive due to affordable creative software

  • A majority of interacting in the art world will be done in the metaverse thru virtual technology

  • Virtually travel to the museum or arts organization

  • Gate keepers will exist in the form of the media conglomerates enforcing copyright laws

  • Authentic art practices will stand in the shadow of the giant media conglomerate
  • Holographic technology exists and is currently being implemented by organizations like Teleportec, who invented a new device which transmits 3-dimensional images in real time

  • In 2001, Teleportec technology was introduced to the field of education

  • Futurist Ray Kurzweil, often gives "virtual lectures" in which a 3D image of himself is projected onto a special podium

  • “This tele-presence system, designed by Teleportec, has to have two running systems: one in Ray's office, and one on the special podium that displays the image. This allows him to conduct lectures in real time and interact with the audience on the other end. He can even make eye contact with students in the audience.”

  • This technology will bridge a gap in the arts by a multitude of ways
  • One focus is on Future Marketing for art, galleries, and consumerism. This new market strategy would be focsed on the individual rather than the populace.
  • For example a computer being able to tell you what art to view or what products to buy based on your pas visits.
  • Already see innovastions for this today with Netflix, Pandora, etc.

  • Another future innovation is the creation of transmedia movies, with a combination of documentary, video games, and interactive debates (example shown at boinboing website). Due to this new cinema style of combining a variety of transmedia resources into one experience; it is able to reach out to different people and allows conversations, opinions, and creativity to flow when it might not have before.

  • Both of these would allow an increase in art and cultural participation by cutting down time spent in a museum looking for specific arts, or in reaching out to a variety of people and allos conversations, opinion, and creativitiy to flow when it might not have before.

  • In 2030, the entering university students will have never known life without the computer and internet, it is second nature to them.

  • Tools already utilized and becoming standardized in various learning environments:
  • hybrid and online courses
  • texting and cell phone applications
  • social networking sitesweb 2.0 tools‘Second Life provides a virtual home for some of the world's most prestigious universities and academic institutions. Virtual classrooms at MIT allow for online collaboration, while Notre Dame makes use of Second Life as a cost effective solution to distance learning’ (Second Life).
  • What does the future of education hold?

With recent technological advances, including nuero-headset devices that measure electrical impulses in the brain and fingertips and allow for the mind to control and program computer functions, possibilities for the future of education are limitless. Free and inexpensive online learning opportunities vs. importance of a degree; will the value of an online degree increase?
