Communication 102

Strengths Quest

BRAIN Freeze!

We need a Brain Break!

Come back in 4 minutes and then get in a circle with shoulders touching.

Making IMPLICIT EXPLICIT

Yes, Talking to People About Difficult Things is Hard...

Why StrengthsQuest?

However it can turn this into this....

Transparency

If there is an issue, don't disappear.

Go talk to the person right away in person before you go bring it to a colleague. Otherwise it becomes drama or gossip.

Be respectful, listen to each other.

Did that not work? Talk to Misha, that's my job.

  • Dominant Hand Theory
  • We become more self aware
  • Find the best ways you can contribute to the team

Online Communication

In Your Communication, Help Others Shine!

What Does Your Superhero Look Like?

Using your True Color and Top 5 Strengths, Draw your Superhero on your white paper and what they bring to this team.

Unless we are at an ASCC event, conference, or retreat, or you are having a personal emergency, my preferred communication is office email maggim@smccd.edu

This way I can:

  • keep it on record if we need to mark an excused absence
  • forward it to the right person
  • cc someone else on the team you need
  • not loose it on my personal phone
  • not look like I am constantly on my cell phone at work

Please

CC (Carbon Copy) me on ASCC emails. This way I can keep it and help back you up in case something happens.

The Fish Bowl Affect

Please remember this when posting on Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.

A good meter for if it is OK--if it was used as an advertisement for the college on a Redwood City Bus would it be appropriate?

Stay away from getting associated with those pictures: ask your friends not to take pictures, or instate a phone bowl at a party.

The Disney Affect: Super Suit

When you are at an event and you have your event shirt on and your name badge on--you are on stage.

Time to Meet Our Superhero Back-Stories

WHO ARE WE?

A family that has it's differences who has to come together and learn our strengths to become a team.

An Incredible Team

Starts With A Strong Foundation

Who knows who this is? What's is his back-story?

A story helps us communicate and understand each other on another level because we know people's context.

What is Retention?

Why Are "Bigs" and "Littles" So Important?

A good mentor or mentee will let you know you might have failed a task, however you're not a failure

You watch out for each other and take care of each other

Interesting ASCC Retention Fact:

In 2013-2014, 100% of the students who dropped out of ASCC did not have a big or little.

No matter how painful the one’s experience, mentors and mentees continue to encourage their partner to learn and improve."

It is when a student finishes school and

doesn't drop out of Cañada.

Why is retention important?

40% drop out after year 1*

60% drop out after year 2*

"They give insights about keeping on task and setting goals and priorities."

  • We all need good mentors
  • We all get really busy, however your big or little is your dedicated person to listen and remind you "it will be OK"
  • You build trust TOGETHER

" Create a learning environment outside of the classroom. We aim to do this by providing services, programs, and information that promote leadership development. We encourage students to participate in campus life through our clubs, student government, and volunteer opportunities. "

Leadership Language 101

Summer Training Day

Proactive vs. Reactive

How you phrase things on your advertisements and signage makes the biggest difference!

Mama Misha's Question Lightening Round.

GO!

Using "I" Statements

What is this?

VS.

Asking Open Ended Questions

  • You don't care about this as much as I do!
  • You're ignoring me!
  • You're letting your position get to your head!
  • You're rude!

Let's Practice!

Who Can Change These For Me?

  • You can't come to the event unless you have a student body card.

  • Don't move the event canopy unless you have four people.

  • You can't take two plates of food at this event.

• “Great leaders ask great questions”

- Funny Example story of the manufacturing company

• Closed Ended Question:

-Do you understand what you are supposed to do at the event? (They can only answer yes or no)

-Have you finished your part of the event yet?

Open Ended Question:

What about the job or project is unclear? (They have to elaborate or say more than a few words.)

Where are you on securing the palm reader for our Spirit Thursday?

Example:

An issue arises during an event and something has come up unexpectedly.

A senator says: "You don't know what you are talking about. You can't relate to this situation."

The senator can create a more constructive

and less-defensive phrase by simply using

"I" instead of "YOU"...

"I am feeling a little frustrated because it feels like you aren't listening to my ideas and I fel like every time I try to talk to interupt me."

We are going to montage through: Parliamentary Procedure, Brown Act, Board Policies, Constitution, and Bylaws.

Example:

Use Impact versus Intent for Event Planning

When in doubt about IMPACT versus INTENT, think of Queen B, AKA 'Yonce and put a ring on it--a platinum one is better than a gold one.

A metaphor about the golden rule versus the platinum rule.

Golden Rule=

Treat others how YOU want to be treated.

Platinum Rule=

Treat others how THEY want to be treated.

"Assassins Event This Thursday!"

Who has an example of this?

Now look at it through the lens/eyes of:

  • The College President who Sees an Email
  • A New Student who Sees a Flier
  • A Middle College Parent who Hears About It
  • The President of the Cultural Club at UC Berkeley who saw it on a Friend's Page

Who's been called a KID this year?

Interesting....

Words we choose to use at events

(in ads or when we are talking to others)

can make a huge difference.

DID YOU KNOW

The definition of "kid" is a "young goat" or to "deceive as a joke"--yet why do people keep calling each other that or let faculty and staff use the word?

Quad

Kid

Gyp

This word can be used for everything when discussing an event or an action item.

I challenge you to use a different adjective!

Impact Versus Intent

Consider how your words/actions can be interpreted by that specific individual, or even the individuals around you who might not know the entire situation or your relationship with that person.

Check in with someone to make sure they are on the same page as you.

What's Worse?

1.) They can say: "Ooops, no, that's not what I meant."

2.) Harboring bad feelings about each other for an entire year.

#ProDevoStory

"I Don't Know"

In Discussion About Your Opinion:

Is oftentimes a placeholder for "I don't want to say" or "I don't want to think about it."

Helping at Event:

Becomes a dead end. Lead them to a person who knows the answer or can help!

Quick!

Someone give me an idea for an event!

"And"

Instead of

"But"
