Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

This is my preliminary production

of a school magazine:

And this is my finished music magazine media product:

I think that the difference between the school and music magazines are amazing, and that after all the research we did before starting the production made a massive difference.

For example, my skills with both photoshop

and QuarkXpress have both increased dramatically,

and I have learnt a lot about the use of both programmes

Even though I have had previous

experience with photoshop, I still learnt new

techniques that I could apply to this magazine.

For example manipulation

of the image

and the use of colours to

create specific connotations

Also with QuarkXpress, my skills using

the four primary tools increased, allowing me

to experiment with the layout more freely

Also, before creating the school magazine

I did not have any research of codes and conventions of front covers or contents page

For example:

  • Overall layout of the contents page
  • Main image should fill the front cover
  • Size 11 font inside the magazine!

(More detailed analysis of professional front cover)

My music magazine therefore:

  • Looks more professional
  • Is much more attractive to an audience
  • Is much more 'stylish' and creative
  • Addresses and represents a specific social group
  • Uses technology better to create a better presented piece of work

Also, when we started the preliminary exercise, we had no audience. This meant that it was not targetted to anyone. This meant that there was little reasoning to do anything, it was more of a case of doing it.

The research into the target audience

Showed us what we should include in our media product

For example

Colours

Images

Content

And Tone

I.e. Informal, friendly, taboo language, colloquialisms

Both

Were made through spontaneous creativity alone

And had no evidence to support the decisions made

However with my music magazine there was much more

Such as:

  • Audience Research
  • Publication Plans and Planning Production
  • More drafts and sketches
  • More time spent
  • Higher attention to detail

This is how I feel that my media product has progressed, from the preliminary task to the music magazine
