At this point the audience infers that the movie is going to be quite serious but they then hear the non-diegetic sound of the zombie burping. This along with the fact that the narrator/protagonist refers to the zombie apocalypse as a “shitstorm” lightens the mood of the audience and they realize that the movie is a comedy.
Continuing the theme of comedy, we proceed to hear the narrator say that in the zombie apocalypse the fat people were the first to die due their inability to run fast. This makes the audience laugh as they find it humorous to see someone struggle and die.
The movie proceeds to show scenes of chaos but one scene that sticks out is the close up of two zombies which are the daughters of a mother. The zombies are dressed as princess which is quite ironic as princesses are cute and innocent however in this scene the zombie daughters are trying to kill their mother as they are brain dead and have no emotion. This scene is quite upsetting yet still has a comedic effect as the woman then throws the zombies off her car and drives off.
The first thing we see is the American flag waving which is quite patriarchal and signifies victory. Despite this we hear some contrapuntal sound in the form of the star spangled banner but it sounds distorted so it could connote Americas downfall. The narrator also says that you cannot ‘have a country without people’. This makes the audience feel confused as they wonder what happened to everyone in the country. We then see the camera zoom out and we see that the flag is on an upside down car which is on flames and in the background we see the famous White House which is a key signifier for safety and power, in a cloud of smoke, connoting that something has gone wrong.
A zombie then jumps on the car and starts chasing a person who has just presumably got out of his upside down car. This then scares the audience as they get to see what has caused all of the commotion. The audience is also scared as the camera is held in a POV shot which adds more verisimilitude and makes the person running away seem more vulnerable.
We then see the same mother get flung out of her car as she didn’t obey the protagonists rules about wearing the seat belt. This scene is also quite comedic and upsetting as seeing her get launched out of her car was quite outstanding but upsetting and the scene connotes that there is no way out of the zombie apocalypse.
