Q2. How does your media

product represent particular

social groups?

The description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way or as being of a certain nature.

Media representations often rely on

stereotypes- recognisable 'stock'

characters wich are instantly

understandable by te viewer.

This our main character and what he wore on the day of filming.

Our main character is wearing maroon chino's with a green jacket and a hat. He is dressed like a teenager but not precisely the way you would see them in the news. In a newspaper they are usually shown wearing tracksuits, hoodies, bandanas and having their hoods up. Sometimes they are shown covering their faces which connotes they must be upto something bad because they are hiding their identity. Our main character has nothing bad to hide and is dressed casually.

Ethnicity

The main character is mixed race. The media usually stereotypes young black teenagers in a negative way, like being involved in gangs. Our main character isn't involved in a gang and isn't wearing a tracksuit like images you would usually see in a newspaper.

Our main character is clearly a teeanger 17 years old.

In the media teeangers are represented in a bad way

usually related to things like gun and knife crime, underage drinking and smoking or dropping out of school/college and being unemployed. However, our main character isn't demostrated in this way. In the opening he is casually walking and thinking deeply. He isn't represented in a a negative way so our opening breaks the general stereotype of teeangers.

Gender and Ability

Our main character is a male however, in our opening he isn't doing anything aggressive or anything to show his ability and strength. He looks quite emotionally down and upset. You don't usually see many males in the media like this because they are represented to be strong, tough and sometime emotionless. Unlike females who are represented to be very emotional. With his ability he isn't using it in a negative way like creating grafitti or fighting. This is a usual negative way teenage boys are represented in the media. In our opening we tried to keep out of this stereotype.

Overall we tried to stay away from the negative stereotypes the media represents young people. We did this becuase we thought our target audience would find it better to connect with our main character if he was shown differently. Plus, we know that all teeangers are not like this and thought it would be nice to not go with a typical stereotype.
