Promoting Environmental Sustainability
-Green building
- A green building is a building that has high-efficiency in the use of natural resources, water and materials that are used in designing and constructing the building.
climate change ?.....
- Climate change is a change in the statistical
distribution of weather over periods of time that
range from decades to millions of years.
Here are some ADVERSE EFFECTS …
- Rising of sea level
- Flooding
- Change of weather pattern
Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of Earth's near- surface air and oceans.
The Green
House Effect
- The rays of the sun warm the Earth.
- Heat from the Earth then travels back into the atmosphere.
- The gases in the atmosphere stop some of the heat from escaping into space and send them back
to the earth.
What would be our
globe without green house effect
- If there were no green house gases earth would have an expected temperature of 5.3 C.
- But the planet’s actual temperature is between 18-19 C.
Man made green house effect
&
Enhanced green house effect
What is Enhanced green house effect ?
- An increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases leads to an increase in the magnitude of the greenhouse effect..
- We are receiving energy faster than we reradiate it.
What can we do ?
What is renewable energy?.....
- Renewable Energy is a form of energy source that is replaced by a natural process at a rate that is equal to or faster than the rate at which that resource is being consumed.
Types of renewable energy sources
Hydropower
Wind power
Solar power
Bio-mass
Fuel cells
Geothermal energy
Types of renewable energy sources possible in Sri Lanka
- Hydropower or hydraulic power is the power that is derived from the force or energy of moving water, which may be harnessed for useful purposes.
Hydroelectricity is the main source of energy in Sri Lanka,
taking a share of nearly 45% of the total
installed capacity in December 2009.

Wind power
What is wind power.......
- Wind power is the conversion of wind energy
into a useful form of energy,
such as using wind turbines to make electricity,
wind mills for mechanical power,
wind pumps for pumping water or drainage etc.
Wind Potential in Sri Lanka
Why wind power ?....
SOLAR POWER
How do we convert sunlight in to electricity ?
- Using photovoltaic cells.
Process of Power generation in solar cells
Worlds largest solar power plant
in China
Why solar power ?.......
- The lack of pollution given off by solar panels when generating electricity.
- Another advantage of solar energy is that the energy source (the sun) is completely renewable.
- Ability to harness power in remote locations.

A Solar power plant in US
- Allows the user to become less dependent on the worlds fossil fuel supplies, which are limited, and cause harm to the environment
-
best windy areas are Mannar,
Kalpitiya and Ambewella
Hambantota wind plant
Puttam wind power plant
01. wind is free and can be captured efficiently
02. small plot of land
03. No environmental pollution
