Genetic engineering is used in many different ways, such as medicine, agriculture, and research. Genetic engineering is used to create vaccines, human growth hormones, and to mass-produce insulin. It is also used with mice to study cancer, obesity, substance abuse, and Parkinson's disease. Finally, it is used with agriculture to create genetically modified foods, which helps to improve salt, cold, or drought tolerance. It also increases the nutritional value in crops.

GloFish is the trading name of genetically modified zebrafish bold red, green or orange fluorescent colors. Although they were not originally created for commercial purposes, they are the first genetically modified animals that are sold as pets.

A certain clinic in the US offers their patients to design or chose eye-colour, skin tone, hair and sex of their baby. It costs around $14.000.

At the moment, it is forbidden to create a baby like this in Germany.
