Holocaust

The kindertransport first departed on December 2, 1938 in Harwich England. It brought 196 children over the Belgium and Dutch border to safety. Over 2 years, more than 10,000 children were sent without parents from Nazi Germany, Poland, Austria, and Czechoslovakia to Great Britain to safety. No children were accompanied with adults. Few babies came along, and they had to be carried by children. Almost every one of the children were Jewish. The last transport was made on May 14, 1940 from Ymuiden.

The Jews created their own defense called the “Jewish Combat Organization” (Zydowska Organizacja Bojowa or ZOB). The ZOB first started July 22, 1942. Another organization started was called The White Rose. This organization had fought against the Nazis and Hitler as well. They were a group of students that got together from the University of Munich put on a graffiti campaign against Hitler, the Holocaust, and the Nazis. The students made leaflets saying why they were fighting for their own lives. Then, late at night they put the leaflets in doors and hung them around towns.

Many more groups of people than Jews were targeted: homosexuals, Poles (Polish people), Romanies (also known as Gypsies), transsexuals, the mentally retarded, mentally ill, the deaf, the physically disabled, and political opponents like social democrats. The Jews were the main focal point of the group because they were the largest to eliminate.

The Holocaust came to an end because of the defeat of the Nazis in World War II by the US and Russia, who were considered allies at the time. In 1944 the allies let go of some of the prisoners from the camps, but not many.

Because Hitler committed suicide in 1945, the Germans decided to surrender and set free all of the Jews.

Who Faught Against the Holocaust?

Ending of the Holocaust

The Nazis

The Nazis were a group of men sent out on a mission by Hitler to eliminate every Jew in Nazi Germany. They headed out for the first time in the 1930's to capture the Jews and take them to Concentration Camps.

The Jews

The Jews were discriminated in the 1930's because many people thought that they caused Germany's defeat from World War I, causing the Great Depression. Jewish citizens were forced to wear a 6-pointed star, also known as the Star Of David to show the Nazis if they were Jewish.

Adolf Hitler

Kindertransport

Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany on April 1, 1933. He strived for world domination, claiming that "The Jews are just an evil race, created by the devil begging for world-wide control." To him, that was an excuse to begin the Holocaust. He started the Nazi Party, a group of men that helped eliminate the Jews. Unfortunately, they were very successful. Over 6,000,000 Jews were killed in terrible ways- murder, starvation, torture, and Concentration Camps. Hitler later committed suicide the day after his marriage around 3:30 pm. With his body, they wrapped him in a gray army blanked smothered in gasoline, then ignited him.
