At first, the citizens of Leeuwarden resisted the anti-Jewish actions, but the Germans resulted with violence, and were able to break up the resistance.

Eva was eight years old when Holland was invaded by the Nazis;
Abraham was five years old at the time.
The Germans immediately began separating the Jews from the rest of the population.
They banned Jewish people from most professions, including Eva and Abraham’s father, who was a high school teacher.
Eva and Abraham Beem were the children of Hartog and Rosette Beem.
Eva was born on May 21, 1932
Abraham was born on June 13,1934.
They were both born in Leeuwarden, Holland.
The Nazis found out that many Jewish children went into hiding, so they began bribing people to tell them of secret Jews.
When Eva was eleven, and Abraham was eight, they were denounced as Jews in February, 1944.
They were soon deported to Auschwitz death camp in Poland.
Auschwitz was almost half the size of Manhatten.
Many Jews were forced into ghettos and forced to wear a yellow Star of David with JEW embroidered on the patch.
The kids were left with a Christian family who offered to foster them.
They were given new identities; Eva was now Linni de Witt, and Abraham was now Jan de Witt.
For three years, they lived in the village of Ermelo, Holland.
Eva and Abraham’s parents decided to take the family, and go into hiding.
They decided it would be safer to run, than to go to a ghetto or a camp.
