  • Ghost of Hamlet's father is revealed to Horatio and a few other guards.
  • Horatio doubts, but the ghost resembles Hamlet's father.

  • The new king Claudius tries to assert his authority with a speech

  • Hamlet is still affected by the death of his father, black clothes matching his "inner sorrows"
  • Hamlet puts up a fasade, hiding his true feelings by agreeing to what his mother and uncle wish.
  • Then he goes off into his I wish I could die, comparing his father and uncle, and questions if his mother really loved his father.
