Editing

When we were editing our film included some special features to add as much suspense into our film as we could , we did this by using things such as slow motion, we used slow motion in a specific shot of the character running away from the villain and the villain hiding in some bushes so the audience could see him but the fleeing character could not. This enabled us to give the audience a sense of suspense and potentially worry for the character. Another effect that worked well was our titling , we used motion tracking to keep the viewers focus on the action within our thriller opening, it also helped to keep the viewers attention. Another type of editing we thought was probably the most effective was at the beginning of our film when our character is waking up in the interview , we made the shot blur in and out to give the viewers a real experience of being that person therefore adding to the viewers interest in the film.

Lighting

Equipment and programs used

In the beginning of our thriller it shows a character being interviewed in a darkened room by a corrupt police officer. We experimented alot with the lighting in this part of the thriller , we wanted to get the scene perfect. Firstly we tried a normal desk lamp/spotlight , we found that although this was quite effective it was slightly cumbersome and looked out of place in the shots. Therefore we then experimented with other types of lighting and decided that the torch application an a phone gave the best effect. We found that using this gave a great effect as the light it gave off looked like a spotlight but it had the advantage of not having to have a big cumbersome light on the desk. Overall the lighting gave a great eerie , but serious effect to the interview and allowed us to create a realistic looking interview scene.

The technology we used to make our thriller was as follows:

cameras- Panasonic camcorder , Canon DSLR and go pro 3: The DSLR was used when filming the outdoor scenes from a distance as it was the best quality at a distance and really captured the detail in the surroundings.

The camcorder was used when filming close up shots and some point of view shots in the house, this was because we thought this camera performed best in low light conditions. The go pro was used to film the point of view shot of me running from the warehouse to the house as it had a head mount that gave a good quality and steady point of view shot.

Programs- Premier pro editing software : We found this editing program not only relatively easy to use but it had all of the tools we needed to create our titling and put the effects we wanted to int our thriller.

Tripods and mounts

We also experimented with different types of mounting systems , for example we did a point of view shot using the head mount for the go pro which turned out to be very effective, as it showed the wearers fear and desire to get away from the villain very clearly. I also learnt how to not only use tripods in a conventional way , but our group also experimented with ways to get some creative shots with a camera and tripod for example we placed the tripod at the top of a hill in one of our first shots to give a sort of birds eye view shot onto the character.

Camera

I had had some experience with a camera before we began making our thriller but using the camera throughout our filming and experimenting with different shot types and different sorts of positions enabled me to learn a lot more about the camera. For example we experimented many times with positions of a shot of me running up the stairs to get all of my movements and facial expressions but still keep the sense of a thriller. we finally decided to split it into two shots as it was the most effective way of keeping the suspense. We experimented a lot with the establishing shot of the warehouses we were filming act,we aimed to get a high up shot to show the expanse of buildings and the overall size of the site .
