Creating your Online Personal Brand

One of the best ways to start developing your online personal brand is by creating a blog

Your blog will act as an online portfolio of your skills, experiences and interests. It will allow you to create a comprehensive reflection of yourself enabling you to develop and promote your personal brand to your peers and potential employers.

Take a look at these blogs. Think about how the author/company has developed a personal brand.

What is the blogger promoting?

How is the name of the blog linked to their personal brand?

How does the look of the blog reflect the content?

E-tivity 5:

(Estimated time: 20 minutes)

Look up two blogs or websites that you like the look and content of.

  • Share these links with your discussion group and explain what you like about the blogs.
  • Consider how these blogs influenced your ideas for your own blog.
  • Have a look at the links other people have shared. Have these given you some further ideas or reinforced your original decisions?

Your online visual identity should be a reflection of who you are in person. Consider your personality traits and how you want people to perceive you.

Remember to think about:

•Style (colour, font, skin, layout)

•Content/media (writing, pictures, videos)

•Pages (how will you divide your blog up into content areas)

•Audience (tone, network, followers)

Top Tips:

  • Maintain the same design 'brand' across all your social media sites.
  • Choose colours and fonts that are easy to read.
  • Make sure that the design you choose reflects your brand.

Top Tips:

  • Choose a name that represents the message you will be communicating
  • Try to get a URL with the same title so that your blog is easy to find
  • Do your research - Does a blog with the same name already exist? Is the name unique? Check at http://www.namecheck.com/social-media-usernames

A URL is a websites unique web address, such as www.blogger.com or www.le.ac.uk

Your blog address will be something like www.blogspot.com/(yourname)

Each website address is unique, just like your home address. Therefore, no two websites will have the same address. Choose yours carefully so people can find your website easily.

A few suggestions:

  • Make sure that your image on social media is consistent (and consistently good!)
  • Make sure that your online presence reflects what you feel is most important about you
  • Consider the aspects of your own brand that would make you appealing to employers
  • There is a lot of advice available online about personal branding, see particularly: http://studentbranding.com/category/college/

One last thing...

Remember who your audience is

Top Tips for creating good content:

  • Be Useful -find out what your readers want and fulfill their need.
  • Write catchy headlines -attract your readers instantly.
  • Make the post scannable - use lists, bold and italics so that readers can find the information they are interested in quickly.
  • Write in plain, concise English

Creating Effective Content

Have a look at the template below and write some notes on how you plan to develop your blog

Purpose

During the Leicester Award you will be using your blog like a diary to reflect on your development over the award, but think about how else you will use it, once you have finished the award.

  • What are you trying to achieve with your blog?
  • Who will be looking at your blog?

Name

Design

How will your blog design reflect your personal brand and the content of the blog?

If possible, use your real name to remain professional.

Try to be unique - which of your first, middle or surname is more original and more memorable?

  • Include your middle name (Carla Mai Froggatt)
  • Put your surname first (Hathaway P)
  • Add a Miss, Mrs or Mr (Mr James Carson)
  • If you have to add a number, try not go overboard stick to one or two digits (Roger 2 Dots)

A blog is a useful employability tool because it provides a platform for you to:

  • Reflect on your experiences
  • Collate and share your interests and opinions.
  • Develop a visible, online portfolio of your work
  • Develop your skills and display your knowledge
  • Develop your creativity

Most importantly it allows you to centralize your online identity.
