As you get ready write personal narratives, think of moments in your life (people, places, objects, emotions, turning points) and the smaller moments within the bigger moments. That is what you will turn into a great story.

What small moment do you see in the larger moment of this video?

Imagination

Small Moments

Writers need imagination to write, but they don't look up into the clouds and imagine stories. They look at everyday moments in their lives.

Any ordinary moments can spark ideas for a story.

  • Think of a person who matters to you, then list clear, small moments you remember
  • A place that matters to you and moments you remember.
  • An object that matters and moments you have with that object.
  • An emotion you've had and times you have felt that emotion.
  • A turning point in your life. (firsts and lasts)
  • Lessons you learned

Imagining Stories from Everyday Moments

Take a basic event and create a story.

Writers pay attention to their own lives, and create a story from small moments.

Creating Powerful Life Stories

You have to see the world as writers see it. You need to see possibilities of writing about real life from moments that happen to you and others. A personal narrative tells the true story of something that happened to you. To write your own personal narrative, choose a story from your life.
