Future Projects

Lessons Learned

• Critical Inquiry

• Thinking about your

own thinking

• Discipline-based

• Criteria-based

Concerns:

Double authentication when off campus - to site and then to resources.

To Address Concerns:

Library Website Improvements

University SharePoint Environment:

• Redesign external site

• Redirect to Citrix based on ip address

Students trying to do research from the publicly

available site instead of using the SharePoint site.

• Create more departmental websites

• Better use of graphics

• More interactivity

Wording - when is it jargon

and when is it necessary and educational

to use academic terms?

SharePoint can work to deliver functions, services, and content as well as

collaboration on documents.

Library Web Parts

Simpler navigation makes it easier

for students to concentrate on

formulating inquiries, choosing

sources, and evaluating results,

as observed at the reference desk.

System-wide decisions and

permissioning structures in SharePoint

bound your design freedom.

Embed library functions &

widgets at the point of need.

Even a team won't think of *everything.*

There are limits to simplifying

a complex system.

Test with real users. Designers and subject

matter experts have different expectations

of how the site will work.

We're not there yet, neither is the technology, and do we really want to be?

It always takes longer than planned.

Ideals of no scrolling, no deep link paths, uncluttered and understandable design are difficult to achieve.

Testing & feedback

make a mockup

design site structure

prototype homepage look and feel

Formal Usability Testing:

Showed students printouts of

homepage options and asked for

their preferences and understanding

of how to do a task.

With a small number of students & faculty, asked them to demonstrate tasks and give feedback.

Content Editor Web Part

Informal Observations:

Asked for feedback from

library staff outside of web team.

Observed students' use,

questions, & comments,

especially with real research

at the reference desk.
