Student Activities
1.Opportunity Cost and Judgments and Decision taught to students (previous lessons)
2.After reading the story, students brainstormed a list of decisions Uncle Jed made
3.Responses were typed up and laminated
(students were able to see that their answers were valued- wasn’t premade by the teacher)
(also, might allow for greater buy-in to the activity)
Findings
- Students worked respectfully and listened to each other
- Lesson established a foundation for future instruction because it allowed students to recognize when they make one choice they give up another
- Working in groups and having to come to a consensus with group members helped them consider perspectives other than their own.
Ways to integrate Technology
View historical documents on-line such as the Declaration of Independence. Discuss what decisions were made and how they affected history
Create a Voicethread with images from the text. Have students add comments about the text
Have students blog about the decisions Uncle Jed made, or to answer questions about the story in a teacher lead discussion
Use an interactive white board to rank order the decisions instead of paper strips
Students create a wiki study guide about opportunity cost and other economic topics
