the LED is polarity sensitive... the longer end is the positive side.
Calibrating
...ir pen. a picture will show you the percentage of the screen covered by the wiimote. The higher the percentage, the better the tracking.
if you aren't happy, reposition the wiimote and try again. Optimum distance should be about 2 times the height of the image, and about a 45 degree angle (so the wiimote can see the ir light of the pen)
It can also be placed on the roof.
