Here are the conventions and what I have challenged.
With the main stories, I was trying to keep it short and snappy like the others on Mixmag. All Mixmag main stories have catchy lines and makes the reader curious with what they are talking about. I have challenged this by saying the name of my artist and also putting it at the bottom unlike the others who have put the main story in the middle, I felt like my magazine fitted the story being at the bottom.
Barcodes on magazines seem to be a neccessary convention but not a property of selling. Most magazines place their barcodes at the bottom right hand corner, this is where I have followed the conventions of the magazines. However, I have challenged the convention by placing the date of issue at the bottom of it as other magazines such as Mixmag and NME place it next to the barcode.
When creating my masthead, I mainly had an idea of what I would like for it to look like from Mixmag as I was basing it on that type of genre. I used the
word "Mix" as I thought of
alcohol and how students have
"mixers" as well as my genre
of magazine being a club magazine
I thought it fit very well with what I was going for. I placed my masthead on the top right hand corner as that was where "Mixmag" placed theirs just so it had a pattern. I have challenged conventions by having a green center colour as I thought it reminded people of UV light and no other magazine has done that.
Main images are conventionally framed as mid shots or long shots dermining on what type of look each magazine is going for. I have shown front covers from Mixmag to show the variety of shots they have used. I have challenged this convention because not one image on their front cover is a close up shot and I feel like it gives my magazine an advantage because it is something different and exciting.
