Did you know that one in four adults read NO books last year?

Why does this matter to you?

One of the goals of this class is to help you understand and enjoy the benefits of becoming a life-long reader.

Some of you have already discovered the benefits on your own...

Whether your experiences with your personal reading have been positive or negative, the challenge you are about to undertake will be one of the most interesting and rewarding accomplishments you will experience this year.

The Fabulous

50 Challenge

You are invited to read

50 BOOKS before the end of

the year.

That may seem like a ridiculous number, and you probably have lots of questions, but please be patient for a few minutes, so I can clarify the details of this challenge.

You can do better than that. This challenge, in fact, is one of the best ways to raise your reading level.

Part of your progression will

come from your exposure to

different genres.

The 50 books are broken down into the following genres:

  • Fantasy (3 books)
  • Realistic Fiction (3 books)
  • Mystery (3 books)
  • Science Fiction (3 books)
  • Classics (3 books)
  • Your Choice (20 books)
  • Non-Fiction-Including biography (3 books)
  • Historical Fiction (3 books)
  • Poetry (2 books)
  • Multi-cultural (3 books)
  • Award Winner (4 books)

Plus, all of these genres are recommended reading in the new Language Arts core adopted by the state of Utah.

I heard

we don't get

points for this. Why

should I do

this?

1. This challenge is not just about earning points for a grade.

It goes beyond that.

2. You will have activities based on the books that you read for

this challenge. If you choose not to read, you will miss out on

those points.

3. Don't get hung up on the number 50. If you read at least 30

minutes a day, you'll have no trouble reading your goal

(especially if you are choosing books that interest you).

A FEW LAST DETAILS:

  • Shoot for books at least 100 pages long and at or above your reading level.
  • To make sure that longer books are not left in the wayside, books with 350+ pages count for two books.
  • Any last questions?

LET'S GET

While others have fought valiantly against teachers, friends, parents, and other "misguided" readers.

The truth is one day you will be out

of school. When that day comes,

will YOU still be a reader?

types of literature

"Okay...So, 35 of my books will be quick picture books, and the other 15 will be books I've read before.

(Heh, heh, heh!)"

Evil laughter for pulling one over on the teacher.

This is a way to

yourself to grow as a person and prepare for what you'll encounter this year and the rest of your life.

What exactly is this challenge?

This is your opportunity to go

just going through the motions of assignments and tasks in school for mere points.
